We are workers, united across unions and labor organizations, who are calling on our siblings in the labor movement to join us in protecting Philadelphia's Chinatown and our city's working families from unethical development and displacement. The proposed construction of the arena (76 Place) threatens the livelihoods of hundreds of workers, predominantly BIPOC and immigrant workers, who call Chinatown home. Arenas are monuments to exploitation, and we cannot stand idly by to let billionaires profit at the expense of vulnerable workers and their families.
- Protect Chinatown’s workers and families from displacement. Philly's Chinatown is the last working class community of color in Center City. This place is unique and serves thousands of poor immigrant families, even after decades of attacks on its existence. Workers at businesses in Chinatown and the surrounding areas can't afford to live if that happens.
Protect workers from losing their jobs for a billionaire’s playground. This arena would displace hundreds of workers from Chinatown and the Fashion District, who are predominantly workers of color and immigrant workers. Many of these workers are excluded from labor protections or good union jobs because of language barriers, exclusionary immigration barriers, and systemic racism. Displacement caused by the arena would exacerbate the painful history of racial division within our beloved labor movement itself. Furthermore, studies have shown that when arenas go up, wages for retail and service workers go down. An arena will depress Center City, not help it.
Refuse to let the ultra-wealthy pit workers against one another. This is a fight to save a working class neighborhood. Don’t let wealthy developers and billionaires spin propaganda to divide workers against each other so they can profit off of us.
Don't give billionaires money off the backs of workers. A recent study showed that Philadelphia could LOSE a billion dollars in tax revenue if 76 Place is approved. That doesn't help workers or our families, but it does make billionaires richer. And hidden subsidies of arena are common. We can't afford to be giving handouts for a sports arena. The developers keep saying they're "open" to getting our state and federal taxes to pay for an arena, and they haven't even signed a pledge to stop them from getting city taxes either. If the arena goes through, Philly's workers will be paying for it for decades to come and our schools, libraries, parks, and roads will be sacrificed.
Let's ensure that workers are not used as bargaining chips for the profit of wealthy developers and corporations. Sign onto this open letter as individuals or as unions/labor organizations to say NO ARENA IN THE HEART OF OUR CITY!
