To fight the different classes of fires, there are different types of fire extinguishers. Each has its own characteristics, capabilities, and limitations. Never fight a fire with an extinguisher that is not designed to extinguish that class of fire. The three main types of portable fire extinguishers are:
Water
Carbon Dioxide
Dry Chemical
If it safe to use a portable fire extinguisher to fight a fire:
