Program Narrative:
Northampton County Public Schools and the YMCA of South Hampton Roads have applied for a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant to serve Kiptopeke and Occohannock Elementary Schools students. Our unique 21st Century After-School Program, designed to serve approximately 98 students at each site (and their families) in grades K-6, offers a comprehensive range of instructional enrichment and remediation, health awareness, social-emotional learning, the arts, and family involvement. This program is not just about academics, but also about nurturing your child's holistic development.
Through our collaborative efforts with community partners, we will implement thematic instructional units based on “Life on the Eastern Shore,” which will focus on local history, culture, and environmental studies. This approach will not only teach learning and literacy skills but also provide career exploration, life skills, character education, and social awareness. We aim to create a safe and engaging learning environment that promotes skills enabling students to cope with daily challenges and take steps to initiate change needed to develop self-confidence and responsibility for the future.
Student activities with teachers, YMCA-trained instructors, and our esteemed community partners will be blended during after-school hours. These positive role models, who are deeply committed to your child's growth, will mentor students and inspire them to achieve their highest potential.
Dates of Operation:
The 21st Century After-School Program will operate Monday through Friday, beginning September 15, 2025. It will operate on all days when school is in session (through June 12, 2025), including early release days on the NCPS calendar. However, the program will not operate when the school is closed due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
Daily Schedule:
Our program will begin at the end of the regular school day. Students will transition to 21st Century programming, where they will receive a snack and homework help or a social-emotional learning lesson. This structured approach ensures that students are engaged and supported in their academic and personal development, instilling confidence in parents about our commitment to their child's growth.
YMCA staff will provide enrichment activities for the entire session on Mondays and Fridays.
NCPS Teachers will provide academic enrichment and tutoring activities for an hour on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. More enrichment activities with the YMCA will follow this until the buses depart or students are picked up by a parent or legal guardian.
Buses will depart at 5:30 p.m. and stop at designated bus stops, which will be shared when program slots are announced. Car riders must be picked up by 6:00 p.m.
