The Local Food and Regional Market Supply Act (The Local FARMS Act)
Dear Members of Congress:
We the undersigned organizations endorse The Local Food and Regional Market Supply Act (The Local FARMS Act, S.1947, H.R.3491) introduced in Congress by Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Representatives Chellie Pingree of Maine, Jeff Fortenberry of Nebraska, and Sean Patrick Maloney of New York.
The Local FARMS Act encourages communities to prosper through farm to fork investments, enables farmers to reach growing new markets, and helps consumers access fresh, healthy food and farm products. The bill will develop and strengthen the infrastructure needed to better connect producers to consumers and create new jobs.
With the American farm economy experiencing a multi-year downturn, family farms nationwide have increasingly found that connection to local and regional food opportunities can help them to create lasting economic success close to home. The 2018 Farm Bill should include programs and resources to support producers who want to diversify their operations by connecting them with growing opportunities in local and regional marketplaces.
We applaud the sponsors of this legislation for honing in on the critical investments the 2018 Farm Bill needs to make for the growing regional farm and food economy. We urge your strong support.
Sincerely,
National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition
