What & Why:
For the past two years Doug Oppliger has been connecting with alumni, digging through archives, and compiling the documentation to capture the “History of Competitive Skiing at Michigan Tech.” We are thrilled to announce Doug is ready to share part of this story with you!
Doug is an alumni of the MTU Nordic Ski Team, a storied member of the MTU Nordic Race Organizing Committee, and a true lifelong fan of Michigan Tech skiing. He envisioned this project as a way to share the rich history of competitive skiing at Michigan Tech with its alumni, friends, and team members, current and future. His work will also serve to revamp the archives of competitive skiing at Michigan Tech, give deserved recognition to its alumni, and help sustain competitive skiing at Michigan Tech into the future.
Doug presented some of the history to the current ski team members this spring, and now he is ready to share it with alumni and friends of Michigan Tech skiing! The entire project covers the history of competitive skiing at Michigan Tech starting with the first documented ski race on campus in 1928 to the present day; and includes all forms of competitive skiing including Nordic, alpine, and ski jumping. For this presentation Doug will focus on the early history (and even pre-history) of competitive skiing through the 1950s, and then outline some of the high (and low) points between then and now.
