BioIcons: Letter of Support

BioIcons is looking for funding to increase the size of its illustration catalog and provide new features on the website.

Since this is platform for scientists from scientists, we need your opinion on the most pressing needs to advance the cause of open scientific illustrations for the life sciences.

Statement of Support

I, the undersigned, voice my need and support for a database of scientific illustrations for the life sciences that obeys the FAIR principles and that is governed by a council of researchers to enforce common visual standards for communicating life science research.

This in particular entails that illustrations:

- are available on an open source website

- use licenses such as CC BY 4.0 or CC0

- are searchable using an application programming interface

- are searchable using text queries and tags

- are versioned

- are available as vector format illustrations

- obey guidelines set by a council of senior and junior researchers and scientific illustrators
