REQUIRED: Health and PE Grade 8: At least one semester of PE is required for all students. All students will be assigned PE for one of their elective classes, meeting 45 minutes each day. This course will include a health curriculum that is a mandatory part of Healthful Living courses. Students have the option to register for all year PE. Open to students who have successfully completed Beginning Exploratory Spanish in 7th grade. Students must have had an A or B average in the course. _____Advanced Band Grade 8(year-long):
8th grade band is an advanced elective where we perform up to 10 times and have opportunities to travel to WCU, Mars Hill, UNC-G, NC State, and Carowinds. In order to register for band in 7th or 8th grade, you must have been a member of the band since 6th grade at EIS. Students may not start band for the first time in the 7th or 8th grade. Students must audition for this class with Mr. Kimbrough. You must play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, drums, or vibraphone to be in the jazz band. _____Theatre Arts Grade 8 (semester): This is an intermediate to advanced approach to the theater arts. Students will use movement, voice, writing and improvisation to develop characters for performance. Through modern media of stage, radio, and video performances, students will communicate ideas and feelings using problem solving skills and technology. They will study theater arts in relation to geography, culture, and history of modern societies from the emergence of the First Global Age (1450) to the present.

The 8th Grade String Orchestra is offered to students with at least two years of study, and progresses to intermediate and more advanced skill studies. This is a year long class and students are expected and required to perform with the orchestra for two major evening concerts and other performances which may include travel and adjudication. Opportunities for students who are motivated towards more advanced skills include auditioning for county and regional orchestra groups. Students are required to have their own instruments, required accessories and method books used for class instruction. _____Visual Art Grade 8 (semester): Enka Middle School artists will explore the elements of art: line, color, shape, value, form, space, and texture with a variety of art materials. Artists will be using dry materials like colored pencils and markers and wet materials like paints. Clay is always a favorite art material for middle school artists.
