Calling Gainesville organizations to endorse demands to the City of Gainesville to divest from corporations

On July 9th, 2024- Alachua County Commissioners passed Ordinance 24-13  which states that the county will divest from long term corporate notes and bonds and will prohibit the investment in any new corporate notes and bonds.

For wording of the ordinance, see here:

This ordinance came about after months of public outcry condemning the genocide in Gaza and community pressure on the county to call for a ceasefire and divest from weapons manufacturers like Lockheed Martin.

Florida Law prohibits the county from divesting from specific corporations for social, political, or ideological reasons (HB3), and only allows divestment for financial reasons. In compliance with Florida law, they voted unanimously to divest from ALL corporations (corporate notes and bonds)- including all that are a part of the Military Industrial Complex.

Now that the county has divested, we are calling for the community to organize again - and bring divestment demands to the City.

The City of Gainesville is also invested in corporations that contribute to Israel's genocide- some of which include Lockheed Martin, Nvidia Corp, Hewlett Packard  (through the Gainesville Fire/Police pension plans) and Caterpillar, Chevron, and Textron (through the Gainesville General Pension Plans).

Please sign this form if your Gainesville-based organization/union/ local business/ place of worship would like to endorse demands for the City of Gainesville to follow Alachua County's lead - and also pass an ordinance based on the county's ordinance 24-13.
