Graduate Student Funding Request for Economics Ph.D. Students
The Department of Economics is accepting research, data purchase, experiment, and travel funding proposals from Ph.D. students in Economics for; Winter 2018 and Spring 2018 quarters, and Summer 2018, of Academic Year 2017-2018.

Travel and experiments for submitted proposals must be (are required) to place place between the below listed dates (NO EXCEPTIONS);

Winter 2018: January 1, 2018 through March 31, 2018
Spring 2018: April 1, 2018 through June 30, 2018
Summer 2018: July 1, 2018 through September ​22, 2018

Students cannot apply for funds for travel, data purchases or experiments that will take place in the ​Fall 2018 academic quarter or any future quarter. Funding proposals will be accepted at a future deadline.

All Economics Ph.D. students in residence at UCSB are eligible to apply. Travel, data purchases, and experiments for submitted proposals must take place during the period of the funding cycle it was applied for. No exceptions!

Proposals will be evaluated and approved or denied, by the Faculty Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Richard Startz.

In addition, those students applying for money for an experiment are required to have the written approval (sent as part of the funding proposal documentation) of the faculty member who runs the experimental reading group, Dr. Ryan Oprea, as well as a written letter of recommendation from their dissertation chair/advisor.

FINAL STEPS (Please read all of the below information carefully in order to apply.)
You are now required to email to grad@econ.ucsb.edu, the documentation of the funding request proposal. Proposals should be written in 12‐point Arial font and be no more than two single‐spaced pages in length (excluding references and budget page).

Each proposal must contain the following:
(1) Name of student and Project/Proposal Title in the top center of the document.

(2) Specific objectives of the project and significance to applicant's research and dissertation. [Travel requests must explain how attending the conference or workshop will contribute to the applicant’s planned or ongoing dissertation research and writing.

(3) Proposal narrative (describes the project and outlines the research methodology – travel awards excluded from this requirement.

(4) Schedule of the project.

Lastly, a letter of recommendation from the student's dissertation committee chair must be sent to the above listed email address by the deadline, as well as an additional letter for those applying for experiment funding.
