Best Practices for Shared-Use Rail Corridors Risk Management

The Rail Transportation and Engineering Center (RailTEC) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is collaborating with Booze Allen Hamilton in conducting a research project for Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to identify, evaluate and mitigate potential hazards and risks associated with operating a high-speed rail (HSR) system adjacent to a conventional freight and/or passenger rail systems. The results will be used to develop a Guidance Document for new HSR developments in the U.S. We are reaching out to U.S. and international stakeholders including rail operators, regulators, researchers and other experts to share their related strategies, operating procedures, maintenance standards, special provisions, regulations, etc. to identify best practices for safe shared-use rail corridors.
