We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge our leaders to act now to restore the
Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Pasco, WA, and properly allocate funds to support the
project, as presented in the previous presentation.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Center has long been a cornerstone of our community, serving as a
vital hub for educational programs, social services, and cultural activities. Unfortunately, the
center has fallen into disrepair due to budget cuts, lack of maintenance, and the recent
reallocation of funds to the Boys and Girls Club, Pasco, WA, from the original set of funds to
support the MLK Center. It can no longer fulfill its crucial role in our community, as it has done
over many years as a staple in our community.
We believe that restoring the MLK Center is essential for the following reasons:
1. Preserving a Community Landmark: The MLK Center is not just a building but a
symbol of our community's commitment to equality, education, and social justice
championed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
2. Providing Essential Services: The center has historically provided critical services such
as after-school programs, community meetings, cultural events, and access to resources
for underserved populations. Restoring the center will allow these vital programs to
resume.
3. Strengthening Community Ties: A restored MLK Center will serve as a gathering place
for people of all ages and backgrounds, fostering a sense of community and mutual
support.
4. Economic and Social Benefits: Investment in the center's restoration will create jobs,
stimulate local businesses, and enhance the quality of life for residents.
We respectfully request that the Pasco City Council and other relevant authorities take
immediate action to:
1. Allocate necessary funds for the restoration of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center.
2. Share a detailed explanation as to why there was not a recommendation to share the 1.26 million with the MLK Center and the Boys and girls club.
3. Develop a comprehensive plan for the renovation and ongoing maintenance of the
facility.
4. Engage with community members to ensure the restored center meets the needs and
aspirations of our diverse population.
5. Give a detailed, comprehensive explanation for the reallocation of funds to understand
the rationale behind the decision from the City Council of Pasco, WA.
We urge you to prioritize this critical project and demonstrate your commitment to
preserving the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in our community.
