Introduction: We are undergraduate students at Cal Poly Pomona, and we are conducting a small research project as part of our class in Sociolinguistics. We are studying how multilingualism affects cultural identity and invite you to participate in this study. Before you decide whether or not to participate, it is important that you understand why we are doing this study and what your participation will involve. Please take your time to read the following information carefully before making your decision.  Please be advised that because we are not planning to publish the results of this study and doing it only for a class project, this study has not been reviewed by the Institutional Review Board.

Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this research is to see how cultural identity is related to the language(s) one speaks.

Procedures: If you agree to participate, you will be asked to complete an online survey. The survey will include questions related to demographics and your experiences in relation to the languages you’re able to speak. The survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. Your participation is entirely voluntary, and you may choose to stop answering the questions and quit the survey at any time.

Risks and Benefits: There are no anticipated risks associated with participating in this survey. Your responses will be kept confidential and will only be used for the purposes of this class research project. The data collected from this survey may contribute to our better understanding of language and identity. No plans are being made to publish the results of this study at the present time. If we gain insights from this project that will warrant further study, we may use these insights to design a larger-scale study subject to the Institutional Review Board.

Confidentiality: Your participation in this study is anonymous. We will not ask you for any personally identifiable information, such as your name or any private information. However, we will ask you about your demographic information, such as your age range, your gender, and ethnicity. Your responses will be stored securely and only accessible to the research team. After we complete the project and make a class presentation about it, we will delete all the data we collected.
