What will the workshops be about?

Mural Painting:

The focus of this workshop is The Mural and how it can connect communities and cultures via art. The goal is for the youth to come away from the workshops with a deeper understanding of where muralism came from and the process it takes in order to paint one. This hopefully will create more of a connection to the murals in their own neighborhoods and the city and spark the idea that imagery can activate and transform a space and tell a story without the need for words. The youth will also learn artistic life skills such as how to write your own artist statement and how to price your work.

Photography:

The focus of this workshop is to encourage youth photographers to document the beauty of San Josè and explore photography in comparison to their real life.

Miguel is trained in a curriculum called Joven Noble, a rite of passage in youth leadership which focuses on respect & life skills. It allows youth to process the challanges of life, and assists them with the transition into adulthood, asking such questions as; Who are you? Where are you from? What do you represent? What are you thankful for?

Through photography the youth will begin to explore the intersections of self and city while growing their portfolio and creative life skills.

Cost $

The program is free and each youth who participates fully in the program will receive a $100 stipend for their creative labor.

This program is supported in part by the California Arts Council, a state agency, City of San José’s District 5 Council’s Office, SVCreates, and the Sares Regis Foundation.

About the Lead Artist

Jessica Carmen Evanjelista

Jessica Carmen is a self taught artist born and raised in California's Central Coast. One half of the art collective The Jams, her mural work of embroidery designs, women's faces, big cats and ink drawings often reflects her matriarchal family and Chicana upbringing. While she had a great upbringing, being a first gen Chicana also came with its downsides - namely that art was not a lucrative career to my immigrant mother. This all changed as she was introduced to cultural art and history via Chicano murals and school art programs. It was during her sixth grade year that she was given the opportunity to paint a mural. Working alongside professional female muralists - even if they didn't look like her - encouraged her to keep experimenting and finding her voice through art.

In 2020, Jessica was a lead muralist in the We. Mural Festival and has not stopped painting since. Jessica loves to share her vast knowledge of the history of muralism and her love of the process so she can pay forward the spark of inspiration that was given to her and support youth to have the creative freedom to create a work that they are proud of.

Miguel Ozuna

Miguel Ozuna is a photographer, father, husband, brother and son who has a passion for being a modern day time traveler, freezing time so that it can be re-lived by anyone who chooses.

Miguel was born in Los Angeles, CA and moved to San Jose at the age of 6. Since then, San Jose has become his biggest canvas. Finding a love and passion for art while attending Bellarmine, he found himself taking pictures and later drawing or painting them for inspiration. In 2021 he was awarded a BFA in Digital Photography from the Arizona State University, with plans of pursuing a MFA in Digital Photography.

Photography has been a source of peace and healing for Miguel, and he hopes that with his photography is able to bring the same to anyone who lays eyes on it.
