Janet Bauer Hartman, 1968 Upper School Merit Scholarship 2025-2026
Thank you for your interest in the Janet Bauer Hartman, 1968 Upper School Merit Scholarship.  The Janet Bauer Hartman, 1968 Upper School Merit Scholarship was established in 2018 through a generous contribution from the Charles T. Bauer Charitable Foundation. The endowment provides full tuition for one Upper School merit scholar.

All 9th grade candidates for admission to the Upper School at Roland Park Country School who have completed the application process will be eligible for consideration for this prestigious scholarship. The Upper School Merit Scholarship Committee will determine a group of final candidates based on most recent school transcripts, common school referral forms, standardized testing, ISEE scores and essays. Scholarship finalists are invited to campus for a round of formal interviews with the Merit Scholarship Committee, including the Head of School and Director of Enrollment Management. The Scholarship recipient will be named from these interviews.

Mrs. Hartman is a Roland Park Country School alumna, past parent, current trustee, and former faculty member who taught Middle School art and Upper School photography for 30 years. Mrs. Hartman embodies qualities that are hallmarks of Roland Park Country School’s philosophy: she inspired in students a lifelong love of learning as well as independence of thought, tenacity of purpose and emotional, physical and spiritual well-being.

Please complete the below application by Wednesday, January 6, 2027 to be considered for the scholarship. By applying to the Janet Bauer Hartman scholarship, you are automatically eligible for the Head of School scholarship, no need to apply. If all admissions file documents are not received by Friday, January 15th, you will not be considered for this scholarship.

The Janet Bauer Hartman, 1968 Upper School Merit Scholarship is renewable each year through graduation, as long as the award recipient remains in good academic standing.

Reflective Essay (350-500 words)

Mrs. Hartman graduated from Roland Park Country School in 1968 and earned a BFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art (MICA). She returned to RPCS and taught Middle School art and Upper School photography and ceramics for the next thirty years. During her time as a teacher, she inspired students to reflect and grow artistically, academically, and personally while considering their impact on their community and the legacy they will leave behind. During a ceremony last year when Mrs. Hartman was awarded the McCauley Bowl 2018, her daughter Meredith remarked: “I call on the values my mom taught me every day in my life. They are distinctly her – and distinctly Roland Park Country School. Show up. Pick up the slack. Help whenever you can. If you’re gonna put your name on something, make sure you’re proud of it. Empathize. Think of others. Take in all that’s around you. Absorb all that color and light, and even some of the shadow, and turn it into something beautiful.” Mrs. Hartman continues to inspire us. She challenges us to be the best version of ourselves, while never losing sight of others. Her legacy in the arts reminds us to leave the world a little better and more beautiful than we found it, in more ways than one. Living your life with a strong sense of your core values is important.

Tell us about the values you call upon every day and why.
