NextGen: The Millie and Alvin Blum 8th - 12th grade program at BHC.

Each opportunity for teens at BHC enables them to pick and choose their Jewish path. We offer a range of topics and styles each month to provide programming that inspires teens’ passions, sparks their curiosity, and supports them in their academic and social goals. Items marked with /S/ earn service hours, which most schools require.

Teens can choose as many options as they like. Registration is rolling and opportunities may be added during the year, which means you can choose to participate in more programs later.

The fee for NextGen is $150. There is an additional cost for Confirmation.

Social

NextGen Kick Off Lunch and Ravens @ NY Watch Party! Sunday, 9/11 12 - 4 pm.

Ravens @Pittsburgh Watch Party and Lunch. Sunday, 12/11 12 - 4 pm.

Night at the Movies. Date TBA.

Lag b'Omer Bonfire Celebration. Saturday, May 6, 8 - 10 pm.

Service

Camp BHC CIT(counselor-in-training): Learn a variety of leadership and real-life skills this summer and participate in all the fun camp has to offer! Camp BHC is a 1-week camp at the very end of the summer. Monday 8/22 - Friday 8/26 8:30 am - 4 pm. /S/

Madrichim Teen Leadership in the Youth Ed classrooms. Madrichim will have lots of opportunities to teach, tutor, create, lead music, and develop projects this year. Sundays, 8:30 am - 12 pm. /S/

Friendship Circle: Friends @ Home (9th - 12th grade): Friends@Home gives children with special needs the chance to bond with teen volunteers in the environment in which they are most comfortable, their own home. Children and their volunteers spend an hour each week playing games, crafting, reading together, or just hanging out. Having their friends over to play--an activity taken for granted by most children--instills feelings of belonging and self-value in a child with special needs. Teens are encouraged (though not required) to volunteer in pairs. Meets weekly. /S/

CPR/AED and First Aid Certification: Pikuach Nefesh, the preservation of human life, is an obligation for all Jews that overrides almost all other mitzvot. Learn adult, child, and infant CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED) use, and basic First Aid.

Parents Night Out Babysitting Club: Now that you have life-saving skills, send the parents out on the town and babysit the kids at BHC with a night of games, a movie, and dinner. Saturday, 4/1, 5 - 9 pm. /S/

Social Action Lab: Create, plan, and implement a Family Social Action Day for our Youth Education families. (3 sessions). Sundays, 10/23, 11/6, 11/20. /S/

7th Annual Friendsgiving Dinner and Mitzvahthon: Enjoy dinner with your friends, shopping, bowling, and wrapping gifts for the Friendship Circle, Saturday, 12/3, 6 - 10 pm. /S/

Labs

Tikun O'Yum: Baking for Baltimore - Cook up delicious meals for those in need in the community. (2 sessions) Sundays, 3/19, 3/26. /S/

NextGen Cafe: Learn to make your favorite Starbucks drink from a professional barista and then sip and schmooze with the Teen Advisory Committee.

Art Lab: Take a private tour of the American Visionary Art Museum, learn a variety of multimedia art approaches and create a one of a kind mixed media art piece on a theme of your choice, with guidance from Julie Wohl. (3 sessions) Sundays, 1/8, 1/22, 1/29

Middot Yoga: Strengthen your body, mind, and spirit. Let Jewish values and prayer guide your yoga practice. (3 sessions) Mondays, 4/16, 4/23, 4/30, 7 - 8 pm

Purim Carnival and Shul-In: Spend the evening at BHC! Saturday night, teens will design and build a game for the Purim Carnival. Stay to volunteer at the Purim Carnival on Sunday. Saturday, 3/4 - Sunday, 3/5. /S/

College Prep (11th and 12th grade): What does a gap year look like? How can I study abroad? Is there Jewish life on campus? Find out over the course of 4 sessions designed to prepare you for college. Dates and times TBA

Immersion

Teen Advisory Committee: Leadership group that helps brainstorm ideas, plans out a range of events and opportunities for teens, and promotes teen programming at BHC. Meets 1 Sunday a month throughout the year.

Rosh Hodesh Girls Group (8th - 10th grades): A safe space to articulate your deepest concerns, be 'real' with your friends, and have fun. Meets monthly on the evenings of the New Moon.

Shevet Guys Group (8th - 10th grades): Explore what it means to be a mensch, build your social circle, and vibe with your tribe. Meets monthly on the full moon throughout the year.

Tzelem Nonbinary Group (8th - 10th grades): For teens of all genders and sexualities to talk about the issues in their lives. Meets monthly throughout the year.

Confirmation (10th grade): Explore Judaism's impact on our lives and our world with BHC clergy. Highlights include the L'Taken weekend seminar in Washington D.C., leading a Shavuot evening service, and the Confirmation dinner and ceremony upon completion of the program. *There is an additional cost for confirmation. Sundays, 2 times a month, 10:30 am - 12 pm.

Internship (11th and 12th grade): Build your college portfolio, learn real life skills, and gain experience in the field of your interest. Use the following section to indicate your choice,
