2020-2021 AWCL Student Enrollment Application
Policy Statement

AWCL practices an enrollment process that is fair and balanced. AWCL will not limit admission or establish any criteria or requirements for admission that are inconsistent with MN Statutes 124E.11.

AWCL shall not discriminate against any student based on race, color, ethnicity, sex, age, national origin, ancestry, religion or creed, status with regard to public assistance, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, intellectual ability, prior measures of achievement or aptitude, athletic ability, or for any other basis that would be unlawful for a public or charter school.

AWCL shall not seek any information about any applicant that may be used to discriminate against them, against either AWCL’s policies or governing laws. This does not preclude AWCL from seeking such information for a lawful purpose about a student after the student has been admitted.

Enrollment and Lottery Procedures:

Enrollment Application:
Enrollment applications for the following school year can be completed online or on paper any time until January 31 at 5pm. Enrollment applications received after January 31 will be placed at the end of the waiting list for the particular grade level in the order they are received. Students with priority preference will be placed at the top of the waiting list in the order they are received. Families will be informed of their position on the waiting list. Any child eligible to receive enrollment preference must also submit an application for enrollment. Preference placements may only be made if the application is submitted by January 31.

Enrollment preference includes:
-Siblings of currently enrolled students. Siblings are defined as children who share a legal guardian with a currently enrolled student (including foster children)
-Children of school staff, including foster children and step-children.

Lottery Procedures:

AWCL will follow the steps outlined below to ensure this procedure is equitable to all applicants:

1 - A completed enrollment application is required for each student in order to be included in the annual lottery and/or placed on the waiting list, by January 31 at 5pm.

2 - If it is determined that a lottery is necessary, letters will be mailed within 10 business days of the closing of the application deadline. This letter will include the specific date, time and location of the lottery as well as confirm the lottery is open to the public. The date will be posted on our school calendar and on the school website, and will be be held prior to February 28.

3 - A Board of Directors representative will conduct the lottery using a randomized lottery process to determine enrollment and waiting lists at each level.

4 - Enrollment offers will be sent by mail and/or email to all families that are awarded a spot through the enrollment process. All other families will receive notification of their waiting list position.

5 - Students will remain on the waiting list until the next enrollment period. In order to be considered for enrollment the following year, families must re-submit their application by January 31 to be included in the lottery process.
