IIA. THE BHS CHOIR BOOSTER ASSOCIATION

PURPOSE

The Bakersfield High School Choir Booster Association exists to provide support for the performance groups and the director of the BHS Choirs. This support includes organizational coordination, volunteer services, and fundraising. This is a non-profit association with full 501(c)3 status. Bylaws are available from the Booster President or Secretary (see contact info below).

MEMBERSHIP

Every parent or guardian of a student in the BHS Choirs is a member of the Booster Association. Members have full voting privileges.

MEETING SCHEDULE

Open Board meetings are held on two evenings annually (the first Tuesdays in October and January) at 5:00 P.M. in the Choir Room, Harvey Auditorium Room 305. Two general membership meetings are held each year: one at the Fall Concert and the other at the Spring “Pops” Concert. Booster meetings are open to all members. If parents have an agenda item for a Board meeting, contact the President at least two days before the meeting.

Presides at Booster board meetings and Booster events and leads the Boosters in decisions and direction.

Vice President: Jennifer Castro-Barnes

Oversees Booster fundraising events, assists the President as needed.

Secretary: Juanita Sikola

Maintains board minutes

Treasurers: Erin Hall

Maintains checkbook and financial reports
Issues checks and reimbursements

IIB. PARENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We are looking for parents to help! Please respond on the form at the back of this handbook if you are interested in helping with any of our MANY activities.

IIC. FUNDRAISING

SCHEDULE

One of the primary responsibilities of the Booster Association is to raise money to reduce the costs related to the BHS Choir Program. These monies, most of which are raised through fundraising, help to pay for our voice classes, uniforms, sheet music, festival fees, transportation costs, spring tour, awards, and miscellaneous choir expenses.

STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

Students are expected to participate in the choir fundraisers to contribute to all financial needs of the choir. For those parents who would rather make a direct donation in lieu of fundraising, this can be indicated on the Handbook Form (back of this booklet). Students are strongly encouraged to bring in sponsorships from family members, friends, places of business, or corporations.

IID. UNIFORMS

BEL CANTO, BASS AND TREBLE CHOIRS The following is required attire for all performances:

OPTION 1: black formal dress (provided or students may purchase their own - $100 pay to BHS CHOIRS), solid closed toe black dress shoes (as plain as possible, flats preferred).

OPTION 2: Black dress shirt and tie (provided - $50 replacement fee if not returned), solid black pants, solid black DRESS shoes with black socks.

CHORALE AND CHAMBER SINGERS

The following is required attire for “casual” performances:

BHS CHOIRS POLO ($30), solid black pants, solid black shoes [as plain as possible, flats preferred, with black socks as appropriate].

Additionally, “formal” attire is a black dress or tuxedo (with solid black dress shoes, black socks w/ tuxes):

TUXEDO: the option of borrowing (for free) or purchasing their tuxedo. If you intend to purchase your tuxedo, please speak with the staff at Friar Tux for pricing.

DRESSES: the option of borrowing (for free) or purchasing their dress. For those purchasing, dresses cost $125 - pay to BHS CHOIRS.

All students who either do not return or return an unusable uniform are responsible for its replacement cost.

Students will be fitted for all uniforms at school.

***All CHORALE and BEL CANTO students wearing dresses need to purchase a Pearl Necklace for $6.

Matching pearl earrings are also available for $4 and the only earrings allowed.
Students who cannot afford the necklace can speak with Ms. Isaac about borrowing.

***IF YOU PURCHASE YOUR DRESS, please make arrangements to have your dress hemmed immediately upon receipt.

Instructions will be given to students when the dress arrives.

If you are willing and able, PURCHASING your uniform SUPPORTS the choir by $aving us money!

IIE. OTHER ACTIVITIES

CO-CURRICULAR FEES

Co-curricular fees include those costs incurred for extra choir-related activities and events outside the regular school curriculum.
These activities include Honor Choirs, special events, and certain choir trips. Fees for these events will be paid by each participating student, with additional underwriting from fundraised monies.

CHORALE/CHAMBER SINGERS RETREAT & CHOIR TOUR/BELLA NOTTE

Two annual overnight events take place each year for Chorale/Chamber Singers students. In the fall, the Choir Retreat (September) is a time for intense rehearsal and group orientation. Held at the Mountain Pointe Camp, the cost for lodging, food and transportation is $40. One of the highlights of the year is the annual Choir Tour each spring. Tour is an overnight weekend trip that involves a variety of performance opportunities and educational experiences. More info will be given about Choir Tour throughout the year. Bella Notte is an overnight trip with Bel Canto, visiting a Southern California high school and/or college, attending a professional performance, and doing a community service project (frequently involving performance)..

Please note that no one is ever kept from participating due to lack of funds.
Students or parents in need of financial assistance should bring it to the attention of Ms. Isaac as soon as possible.

IIF. MONIES OWED

FUNDRAISERS/UNIFORMS

Monies owed from fundraisers/uniforms/etc. are due on the dates given. If monies owed are not received promptly, students will have the debt placed on their student ASB account, preventing them from receiving schedules, report cards, and graduating.

FOLDERS/SHEET MUSIC

Students will be required to supply their own pencil and a BLACK choir binder/folder, and to keep their folders in good condition and neatly ordered. Pencils may be purchased on-campus for 25 cents. In the unlikely event that a folder is not returned, fees for any sheet music lost are $5 per title (except for larger items to be handled on a case-by-case basis).

IIG. PERFORMANCE TICKETS

Tickets for the choirs’ annual performances (Dessert Theater, Fall Concert, Winter Concert, Festival Concert, and Spring “Pops”) are sold prior to each event. Look for a ticket envelope and information to come home with your student prior to the performance, or phone or email Ms. Isaac or the Booster officers for tickets. The cost for tickets is $7 at the door for ages 12 and up (children under 12 are free). Additionally, if you become a “Benefactor” of the BHS Choirs, you will receive two free tickets to each performance. Just fill out the attached Sponsorship Form and return it with your donation.
