WV Can't Wait Community Defender Training Application
WV Can't Wait is a statewide movement to win a people's government in the Mountain State. We throw our weight behind the people who are doing the work that government fails to do.

White supremacists and authoritarian forces are on the rise. We need a broader range of skills to fight the battles ahead -- everything from self-defense and first aid to direct action organizing and harm reduction (and more). This year, we are hosting our first-ever in-depth 5-day Community Defender Training -- for folks who want to gain a wide range of skills to support communities that are under attack in our state.

Skills trainings will include:
  * Adult CPR/AED Certification and Advanced First Aid
  * Direct Action Skills and Tactics
  * Introduction to Personal Safety and Healing
  * Hosting Safe, Inclusive Events
  * Community Mental Health & Resilience Training
  * Management of Aggressive Behaviors Certification
  * SABER Pepper Spray End User Certification
  * Active Violence Emergency Response Training (AVERT)
  * Deterrence and Prevention of Targeted Violence and Harassment
  * Introduction to Defensive Handgun Techniques
  * Defense against Targeted Violence
  * Introduction to Harm Reduction principles and resources in WV
  * Basics for Interacting with Law Enforcement
  * Community Organizing and Team-Building Skills

This training is for anyone who wants to learn proven techniques for protecting, healing, organizing, and supporting communities facing violence or prolonged exposure to trauma.

If you are interested in attending, please complete the application below and we will follow-up with you to schedule a phone call: to answer any questions you may have, learn more about your interests in the training, and provide further details.

The training is scheduled from April 17-April 21, 9am-5pm each day. All trainings will be held in-person in the Charleston, WV area. (We will share the exact location with participants.) Application deadline is Thursday, February 29th.

(Items in bold are areas where participants can receive a certificate for their participation.)

Nothing more.) *

Lodging needs. Would you be interested in on-site or nearby lodging options? If so, tell us more about your situation in the blank space below. (Lodging is not currently provided, for cost reasons, but we want to learn more about what the lodging needs are so that we can help folks coordinate with one another on safe, inexpensive options.)
Attendance. This is a 5-day training from Wednesday, April 17th to Sunday, April 21st. (The 21st is the "firearms day" and is optional.) Our sessions will run 9am-5pm each day, and folks are expected to attend at least the first 4 days, everyday. Do you plan to attend the entire training? *
How do you hope to bring these skills back to your town, community, organization, or family?  *
We have limited spots for the training, and we want to get to know everyone before they attend. When might be a good time to reach you for a phone call? *
Most of the training will be in a classroom setting, requiring sitting, participating in discussion, small group breakouts, etc. During some components (CPR, firearms, pepper spray, de-escalation, etc.), there will be more physical activity. Are there any physical or other accommodations (child care? etc.?) that would help you be able to participate comfortably? *
