Thank you for taking time to share your feedback regarding our newest mural at Pocket Park in downtown Elgin. This project is part of the “Making Space” initiative organized by the Social Justice Collective in response to the Black Lives Matter activism and social protests that defined the summer of 2020. This mural is to take the place of the controversial mural “American Nocturne” that was taken down when it’s source material was revealed to be a photograph of a 1930 lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith in Marion Indiana. American Nocturne was on display for about 10 years in downtown Elgin. This new mural will be a visual representation of our community’s response to the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent protests that took place. The story of last summer and this mural process are being documented in a documentary to ensure that the history is truthfully represented and not lost.

Gracias por tomarse el tiempo para compartir sus comentarios sobre nuestro nuevo mural en Pocket Park en el centro de Elgin. Este proyecto es parte de la iniciativa “Making Space” organizada por el Colectivo de Justicia Social que se fundo inspirada por el  activismo Black Lives Matter y las protestas sociales que definieron el verano de 2020. Este mural ocupará el lugar del polémico mural “American Nocturne” que fue retirado cuando se reveló que su material original era una fotografía de un linchamiento de Thomas Shipp y Abram Smith en 1930 en Marion Indiana. American Nocturne estuvo en exhibición durante unos 10 años en el centro de Elgin. Este nuevo mural será la respuesta de nuestra comunidad al asesinato de George Floyd y las protestas que surgieron despues. La historia del verano pasado y esta producción del mural se están documentando en un documental para garantizar que la historia esté representada con veracidad y no se pierda.
