Humorist Jean Shepherd's memoir of growing up in the Midwest in 1941 follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself, at Higbee's Department Store. The consistent response: "You'll shoot your eye out!" All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family's temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the boys' experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie's father winning a lamp shaped like a woman's leg in a net stocking; Ralphie's fantasy scenarios and more. A Christmas Story is destined to become a theatrical holiday perennial.

Ralph Parker (40+) – Adult main character, a colorful storyteller with a dry and ironic voice. This part is the narrator and needs to be able to memorize and deliver long monologues.
Ralphie Parker (8-11) – Child main character, a bright, sometimes mischievous boy who is scheming to get everything he wants for Christmas! Not as many lines as Adult Ralph but a lot of stage time and acting.
Mother (30-50) – Ralphie’s Mom, a woman trying to hold a household together but with a bit of a silly sense of humor and a lot of love.
The Old Man (35-60) – Ralphie’s Dad, a typical 40’s man – hardworking, salt of the earth, and devoted to his family in his own quiet way.
Randy Parker (6-9) – Ralphie’s younger brother, a mostly silent part but needs to be a silly outgoing boy who can whine, cry, pout, laugh, and do a mean piggy impression.
Miss Sheilds (20+) – Ralphie’s teacher. A bit on the stern side.
Flick (8-11) – Ralphie’s classmate and best friend. Perennially unlucky – gets his tongue stuck to a flagpole.
Schwartz (8-11) – Ralphie’s classmate and best friend. His partner in crime.
Esther Jane Alberry (8-11) – Ralphie’s classmate, has a crush on him.
Helen Weathers (8-11) – Ralphie’s classmate, precocious and assertive.
Scut Farkas (10-14) – Ralphie’s classmate and a bully.
Extra Man (20+) – Plays several short roles including the voice of Santa Claus.
