The AI & Democracy Foundation (AIDF) is working toward a world where democratic capacity keeps pace with advances in AI. We believe that both Democracy for AI and AI for Democracy are essential to preserving human agency and collective governance in the face of powerful technology.

We’re a small, fast-moving team backed by strong funding and momentum. If you're mission-aligned, bring direct experience in this space, and are excited about building democratic infrastructure for the AI era, we want to hear from you.

What We’re Looking For

We’re currently exploring candidates for a range of roles. Some are well-scoped, others are more flexible. We’re especially interested in individuals with the following:
• Deep experience in AI governance, deliberative democracy, AI safety, or related fields
• Strong systems thinking, stakeholder coordination, and research or execution ability
• High emotional intelligence and communication skills, especially in cross-functional and multi-stakeholder settings

Please note: We’re specifically looking for candidates who already have significant experience in these areas. While we deeply appreciate broad interest in our mission, we’re prioritizing candidates with established experience in this space, as we can’t currently support early-career onboarding.

These are all full-time, hybrid SF Bay Area Based roles. While priority will be given to candidates in this location, remote applicants with substantial Pacific Time overlap (at least 10–4pm PT) may also apply.

Opportunities at AIDF

We’re currently exploring a few key roles, including:

Managing Director

The Managing Director will partner closely with AIDF’s CEO to shape strategy, launch and lead major initiatives. This role includes direct team management, recruiting, fundraising support, and stewardship of internal systems. Ideal candidates have senior leadership experience (e.g., founder, CEO, ED, COO) in startup or nonprofit environments, excel at systems thinking and team building, could act as a public representative of the organization, and are deeply aligned with AIDF’s mission.

Program Director / Lead

The Program Director / Project Lead (depending on seniority) will drive large, complex initiatives, involving many stakeholders,  and can manage a working group of world class experts across industry, civil society, and academia. This person should have a startup mindset and be able to write, synthesize, and execute quickly and independently. The ideal candidate has strong existing relationships and domain knowledge in AI safety, governance, or adjacent areas.

Senior Contributors

We’re open to hearing from individuals whose backgrounds don’t map exactly to these roles but who are aligned with our mission and bring experience in AI deliberative democracy, governance, or adjacent fields.

If you’re earlier in your career or still building experience in this space, we’re not currently hiring for entry-level roles. We encourage you to stay connected and check our website for future opportunities as our team continues to grow.

Our Culture

We’re looking for team members who:

• Care deeply about AI governance and democratic innovation
• Are equally comfortable shaping strategy and executing it
• Thrive in early-stage, fast-moving environments
• Think from first principles and solve problems creatively
• Communicate clearly and collaborate with respect

We occasionally start with short-term contracts or “consult-to-hire” arrangements to ensure mutual fit.

How to Apply

If you're excited by our mission and think you bring relevant experience to this work, we’d love to hear from you. We review all submissions thoughtfully, but due to limited team capacity, we may not be able to respond individually to every applicant. Thank you for understanding
