Authority of Christ

In the first two lessons of this course you have learned of the deep respect we ought to have for the Word of God and have seen the difference between the Old and New Testaments. In this lesson another great principle of the Bible will be studied: the authority of Christ. Notice the following text and Christ’s declaration of His power or authority:

Matthew 28:18-20 “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, ‘All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye, therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.’”

In the famous 14th chapter of the Book of John, Jesus Christ declared, “I am the way, the truth, and life; no man comes to the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). In the scene on the Mount of Transfiguration, God declared that we are to hear and obey His Son. Study the following Scriptures carefully and you will understand that Christ has all authority today. He must be heard and obeyed today!

Read Matthew 17:1-6 carefully:
4. God spoke from heaven and said what?

This is the second time God has borne public witness to the Sonship of Jesus. The other time was at His baptism by John. (Matthew 3:17) Note the difference. In the latter passage, the words, “hear ye Him,” are added. This passage teaches that there is now one who is greater than Moses or the prophets. In the very presence of Moses the lawgiver and Elijah the head of the prophets, God pointed out Jesus and declared that He was His Son and that He should now be heard. Thus a cloud overshadowed them and one greater than they remained. It is He that is to be heard.
*
5. Matthew 28:18 - Jesus said, “All ________ is given unto ______ in heaven and in earth.” Jesus has all power; therefore, Moses and the Law of the Old Covenant had to be removed in order to make way for the New Covenant of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 10:9). *
6. Hebrews 5:8-9 - Jesus is the _________ of eternal salvation.
*
7. Hebrews 2:2 - We are to look to _______ who is the author and finisher of our faith. Men who look to the Old Law given under Moses fail to heed the command of God as given here.
*
8. Acts 2:38 - Men were to repent and be baptized in the name of or by the authority of ________. *

*
Read Hebrews 9:11-28 carefully before answering the next section:

11. Where a testament is, the testator must have _________ (verses 16-17). Christ died, therefore, His  _________  is of force today. The testament of Moses, the Old Testament, is no longer of force today. The testament of Christ, the New Testament, is of force. There cannot be two laws in force at the same time (Hebrews 10:9-10).

This point may be illustrated thusly: A state upon becoming a part of the Union drew up a constitution, but if at some later date that state decides upon the need for a new constitution, when the new one be- comes effective, the old becomes void or disannulled. So when the New Testament became of force, the Old Testament was disannulled.
*
Read Hebrews 9:11-28 carefully before answering the next section:

12. A testament is of no strength while the testator is _______. While Christ was alive, He could dispense with blessings as He saw fit, as He did with the thief on the cross, the stick of the palsy (Mark 2:10-11), etc., but after the testator dies, His will or testament is of force then and his blessings must be dispensed according to it. That is why the New Testament is our only guide to show us the way of salvation. It is the will or testament of Jesus Christ.
*
13a. The New Covenant, therefore, began in force after the _____ of the testator. Did the thief on the cross obtain His blessings before or after the New Covenant became effective? _____.
*
13b. Did the law that a man must be baptized in order to receive the remission of sins (Acts 2:38; Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:16) apply to the thief on the cross? _____ Why? __________________.

Study Galatians 5:1-4:

14. Those who accepted the Law of Moses as authority for circumcision became a ________ to do the __________ law (verse 3).
*
Study Galatians 5:1-4:

15. This caused the authority of Christ to become of _____ unto them (verse 4).
*
Study Galatians 5:1-4:

16. All who thus rejected the authority of Christ by accepting also the authority of the law of Moses ____ from grace (verse 4).

Paul teaches in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that the Scriptures will make a man perfect, completely furnished unto every good work. Here him:

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

Thus, we see that we need no human creeds. We have the New Testament, and that is all that is needed. Think a minute! If a creed is shorter than the New Testament, it is too short! If it is different from the New Testament, it is wrong. If it is the same as the New Testament, it is unnecessary, for we already have the Word of God.
