4th to 5th Math Plus and Math Apps Screening Permission Slip
For students who have a very strong aptitude and love for math, McKelvie offers two classes that may be appropriate for your incoming 5th grader.  One is called Math Plus and the other is called Math Apps.  While our standard Grade Level Math classes are robust and fit the needs of almost all students, Math Plus and Math Apps offer enrichment opportunities for kids who want to participate in additional math activities.

This permission form is to allow your child to participate in a screening to determine whether they qualify for Math Plus or Math Apps.  Students who do not qualify for either, are placed in the standard Grade Level Math class for 5th grade.

Grade Level Math - This math class covers the 5th grade curriculum and is the default level for all students.  The vast majority of students are placed in Grade Level Math. (APPROPRIATE FOR ALMOST ALL STUDENTS)

Math Plus - This math class replaces the standard Grade Level Math class. It covers the 5th grade curriculum at a quicker pace, in order to build in time for projects and activities that dive deeper into the concepts covered in standard Grade Level Math classes. Students with qualifying scores will be recommended for placement in this class. This class is geared toward students with a very strong aptitude and love for math due to the pace at which the curriculum is taught and the additional work it entails.  (TYPICALLY A SMALL NUMBER OF STUDENTS QUALIFY)

Math Apps Enrichment -  This class is in addition to the standard Grade Level Math class.  Students who qualify for Math Apps will have one 45 minute block of Math Apps, an enrichment math class that will meet once every 6 days of the McKelvie cycle during one of their WIN (What I Need) blocks. Math Apps focuses on problem solving techniques, visual spatial activities, logical reasoning, and creative ways to approach mathematical thinking. Students with qualifying scores will be recommended for placement in this math option. (TYPICALLY SOME STUDENTS QUALIFY)

If you have multiple children in the same grade, please fill out a separate form for each.

The screening test will be conducted in May. Dates of testing will be determined by each elementary school. Please compete this form by May 3, 2024. Results will be reported in June.
