Robert W. Summers Scholarship in Communication and Journalism 2018-2019
The Communication Department of Saint Mary’s College is pleased to offer the “Robert W. Summers Scholarship Award in Communication and Journalism.” These scholarship monies support both the academic preparation and the per-professional activities of Saint Mary’s College full-time undergraduate students. Students are selected to receive scholarships based on their interest in pursuing the study of Communication, with a specific preference for journalism (broadly defined) as a major or minor and/or as a potential career.

Annual awards for 2018-2019 academic year are estimated at $6000 per award.

Who Can Apply?
There are two types of students eligible for this award:
1) Individuals applying for first-year admission to Saint Mary's College of California in Fall of 2018 who plan on majoring or minoring in Communication (or other majors who can demonstrate a substantial continued record of journalism) are eligible for up to 4 years of funding.
2) Full-time undergraduates who will be entering their "third" or "junior" (19-27 credits) year at Saint Mary's in Fall of 2018, including transfer students, majoring or minoring in Communication (or other majors who can demonstrate a substantial continued record of journalism) are eligible for up to 2 years of funding.
International students are welcome to apply for either based on fulfilling all other eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Requirements (First year applicants)
-The student must submit all required scholarship application materials.
-The student must have at least a 3.0 (no less) high school grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at the time of application

Eligibility Requirements (Third year applicants)
-The student must 1) be enrolled as a full-time student at Saint Mary's or 2) be applying to transfer to Saint Mary's
-Be majoring or minoring in Communication, and/or demonstrate a significant continued involvement in and commitment to journalism (broadly defined)

Continuing Eligibility Requirements (both awards)
-Summers Scholarships are reviewed each year, with the possibility for renewal. Students must submit an abbreviated application (transcript, resume, statement) to remain eligible for Summers scholarships each academic year. -Reapplication is due January 15.
-Students must remain in good disciplinary standing with the College
-The student must maintain at least a 3.0 (no less) grade point average (on a 4.0 scale)
-The student must be attending Saint Mary's College full-time
-The student must continue to be a Communication major or minor and/or demonstrate a significant continued involvement in and commitment to journalism (broadly defined).

Other Information Related to Summers Scholarships
-Summers Scholarships are based on academic ability and interest in and commitment to the study of Communication and/or journalism (broadly defined) not financial need.
-Summers Scholarships are partial awards rather than full-tuition scholarships.
-Undisbursed portions of the scholarship may be revoked at any time should students cease to meet the eligibility requirements.
-The value of this scholarship, when added to other scholarships received by the awardee, may not exceed the total cost of tuition.
-Other need-based and merit scholarships from Saint Mary’s College take priority over this scholarship.

Application Requirements
The scholarship application should include:
• A brief statement (500 words) of your interest in the field of Communication, and especially journalism (broadly defined).
• A transcript of coursework that demonstrates a solid record of academic achievement. First-year students must supply a high school transcript; current undergraduates, including transfers, must submit transcripts for all college-level coursework
• A resume that outlines relevant experience at internships, training sessions, student media, or other paid or volunteer work.
• A select portfolio that provides evidence of your relevant non-fiction work: academic essays; news, sports or feature stories; broadcast/cable television production; film/video documentary; still photography; or blog/web design.
• One letter of reference from an educator outside the SMC Communication department who can speak to your record of academic achievement and interest in studying Communication and/or Journalism (broadly conceived).
Submissions for the scholarship must be made online by January 15, 2018 at 11:59pm PST
• Interview with a Communication Department faculty member during Scholarship Saturday in February
