Modeling instruction in Science provides students with structures and practices to be able to make meaning of complex scientific ideas and experiences. Rooted in an initial phenomenon or investigation, students then collaborate to illustrate their mental model “for now” and make sense of what, why, and how something has happened. Through a series of practices and discussions, students gain a deeper understanding, not from a textbook or lecture, but as a group. (Inspired by Mimodelinginstruction.org and AMTA) This introduction will focus on energy across the science disciplines.
Participants will see the impact modeling will have on their students’ depth of thinking and understanding and walk away with ways to implement and deepen modeling practices in their classroom. This is not a curriculum training.
