The YAB is the first step in creating a permanent, year-round youth decision-making role at Girls Rock! DC. It will be a leadership body for GR!DC teens, but its inaugural 2017-2018 members will be the ones who explore and define the exact scope of its work. First and foremost, the YAB will consult with the adult GR!DC leaders to make decisions about GR!DC's future priorities and actions. YAB will be a dynamic leadership space where members will engage in training and skill-building, contribute to decision-making and also have opportunities for developing their own projects that support GR!DC’s mission and vision.
Prior experience in the areas listed below is not necessary or expected! We value your voices and are here to support you. This experience is also meant to build your leadership skills and teach you new things.
Youth Advisory Board members will have the chance to shape decisions regarding:-Hiring new GR!DC staff and selecting members of our adult board. You will have the opportunity to help observe & conduct interviews.-Communications/social media/messaging and decisions about how GR!DC should present itself and publicly respond to current events-Brainstorming and participating in community partnerships with other DC organizations-Defining what GR!DC's organizational priorities should be, (including financial priorities such as where our money/resources should go and what GR!DC should invest in)-Deciding what their other projects will be! If you have ideas about what else we should do, tell us below!
Depending on time constraints and interest, board members may also do independent projects related to their interests (outreach, fundraising, communications/graphic design, programming, community partnerships, etc.). These projects would be presented to their peers and GR!DC's adult leader structure.
You are eligible to apply if:-You will be 15-18 years old by the first board meeting (October 21, 2017). -You have participated in a Girls Rock program at least once before (this includes Girls Rock! DC Summer Camp, After-School Program, or a Girls Rock program in a different city).-You are able to commit to attending at least 7 out of 10 board meetings. -You care about Girls Rock! DC and about creating change in your community!
Where/when/how often will we meet?We will meet at the Girls Rock! DC office in Northwest DC (metro fare support will be available). YAB meetings will take place on the third Saturday of each month from 3-5pm. (Meetings may occasionally extend to 3 hours, which would be communicated in advance). Meetings for the 2017-2018 cycle will run from October until July, and dates are as follows: October 21, 2017; November 18, 2017; December 16, 2017; January 20, 2018; February 17, 2018; March 17, 2018; April 21, 2018; May 19, 2018; June 16, 2018; July 21, 2018.
If you wish to participate in YAB, but the dates/times are a problem for you, please fill out the application anyway, and state your concerns in the space provided. We will see what we can do to make participation possible.
Other opportunities outside of these meetings will be periodically offered to YAB members. They include chances to participate in interviews as GR!DC selects an adult board and hires staff, art & community events, and local leadership conferences.

Participate on a phone interview with GR!DC (we’ll reach out to your guardian first, for permission to contact you. Once they reply, we will reach out to you directly!) 3. Stay tuned for announcement of new members (around October 2, 2017)
Participants will be selected by the GR!DC leadership team on the basis of eligibility and with an aim to ensure that participant's viewpoints and experiences are reflective of GR!DC's camper base. Metro fare support and snacks will be provided at each meeting.
