Your stories: Have you seen abuse or neglect in group homes?
My name is Brad Schmidt, and I'm an investigative reporter for The Oregonian. If you or a loved one has experience with group or foster homes for people with developmental disabilities, I would like to talk to you.
Let me explain why.
The newsroom's reporting has revealed serious flaws within Oregon's system to ensure medical decision-making for people with developmental disabilities who can't do so on their own (
). And our reporting sparked U.S. Senate investigation of Oregon group homes (
While state officials have now taken some steps to fix those problems, our reporting suggests issues may run deeper.
I'd like to hear from the people who've seen exactly how the system works, not in theory, but in practice. If you've crossed paths with the state's I/DD program, I ask that you help give a voice to vulnerable Oregonians and tell me your story.
I will keep your information confidential until and unless you give me permission to do otherwise. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly:
And if you'd like to send me records anonymously, please mail them to my office in an envelope without a return address.
