D​CNW Members get more power, more voice, more access, and more community. We are becoming a membership organization and adding membership benefits because members OWN our nonprofit collective and it needs to be easy for you to express your needs and desires. A large, empowered membership means a healthy, helpful collective.
Membership comes with privileges, powers, and some optional responsibilities. We want everyone to to become a Member! Not only will you feel a sense of ownership, but your participation, your voice, your needs and your opinions will grow and improve DCNW! Membership Benefits Camp!

Community! - Join our Dance Tribe
  • We’re creating ways to reach out and connect you to our fun, deep, safe, wild community between camps.   We’d like you to be able to stay connected to local dances, support groups, and projects.
  • Member’s Only email lists and Membership Directory—pictures, contact info, all the things you want to share.
Be Heard!
  • Members have a strong voice in decision-making at Community Meetings where decision-making occurs. We are run by the members!
  • Members may attend and participate in Community Meetings for decision-making. Community meetings may be at camp and/or online.
  • Members nominate Spokespeople to represent them on the Spokescouncil (previously called the Board)
  • The Spokescouncil makes policy decisions and helps creation the vision for future camps.

  • The D​CNW Member Sliding Scale​ donation ​goes from free to any amount you would like to contribute. Generous donations funded our launch, continued our work, and provided camp access for those with financial limitations. Donation Page

    Our purpose is     to aid, support, and assist dance communities and its participants through the promotion of accessibility, sustainability, collaboration, and growth.

Spokescouncil Nomination

The way we decide determines what we decide. Dance Camp Northwest is committed to consent decision-making, maximizing inclusion, power-equivalence, transparency, brilliance, and happiness. 

The DCNW Membership holds the decision-making power. This power is expressed by community consent. The Membership selects our Spokescouncil, which represents the Membership between Community Meetings.

The DCNW Spokescouncil

  • The Spokescouncil represents the members of Dance Collective Northwest.
  • Holds the vision of collaboration and co-creation, bridging between the ecstatic, partner, contact improv, and other dance communities
  • Makes policy decisions for DCNW, and other events
  • Shapes the short- and long-term vision, program, and planning
  • Helps create and select staff and members of the committees and circles
  • Discusses agenda submitted by committees
  • Approves the budget
  • Approves decisions with financial impact, including all forms of compensation
  • Discusses input from the community
  • Produces opening and closing circle at cam

Who are people you would like to speak for you on the Spokescouncil? Your responses will be shared with all other members.
List as many as you like. Include up to 200 words on why each is well qualified. You may nominate yourself, but try to nominate at least one other if you can. Terms will be staggered and range one to three years. Don’t worry about your nominee not accepting the position! Just seeing your reasons, combined with other people’s reasons, may convince them! They can always say, “No thanks” after seeing all the reasons why they should say, “Yes, please!” We need the right people, and often, people need to be told why they are the right people!  
Additional Spokescouncil Details 

Joining the Spokescouncil is a great way for those with experience at DCNW to get involved at a deeper level. Our Spokescouncil applies its expertise, insight, and vision to strengthen DCNW’s future. 

Spokescouncil (SC) Job Description 

  • Identify and further goals, policies, and directives in collaboration with committees and members.
  • Uphold values and mission statements.
  • Manage finances and resources.
  • Carry out DCNW’s mandate as an educational nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.
Qualifications 
  • Have attended at least two Summer Camps.
  • Be a Member.
  • Camp organizing experience.
  • Willingness to help create and further long-term visions for the community.


Skills

  • Emotional awareness and ability to work and play well with others.
  • A basic understanding of consent decision-making, or a willingness to learn.
  • Spoken and written communication skills.
  • Grasp of modern technology—email, document management, video conferencing.

Skills Desired

  • Budgeting and financial planning experience.
  • Event management, other managerial or entrepreneurial experience.

Terms

  • Terms will be staggered and range one to three years, reconfirmed at the annual Community Meeting.
  • New SC members become active after the consent of the community at an annual Community Meeting held for that purpose.
  • Outgoing members are expected to attend and complete their term at the first post-Camp SC meeting.

Meetings

  • SC Members must attend and participate in meetings, generally by video conference. There may be about nine SC meetings (of approximately 4 hours each) plus two budget meetings (4-5 hours), and potentially one in-person weekend Retreat and Training. Participation in infrequent Emergency meetings may be required. SC members are allowed to miss no more than two unexcused meetings per year.
  • SC Members must review agendas before meetings.

At-Camp Responsibilities

  • SC members are expected to meet at camp and be accessible to the community.
  • SC members have a working camp, including optional meetings as needed.

Communication within the SC

  • SC members will primarily use Zoom, email, Slack, text, and phone to communicate.
  • Each SC member will be assigned a dcnw.org email address for all SC correspondence.
  • SC members are encouraged to check their email/Slack daily, are expected to respond, as needed, frequently, and must communicate about any periods when they will be unavailable.

Document Management

  • Much of the SC’s work involves collaborative document work. Members of the SC are required to understand or be willing to learn about SC’s document infrastructure and document management systems; we currently use Google Drive for this.

Committee Work

  • Individual SC members are expected to participate in and hold liaison roles in working groups.

Compensation

  • SC members attend Camp at no cost and chore-free during the years they serve.
  • Reasonable SC-related expenses are reimbursed.
