'NEVER TOO LATE' 2020 - APPLICATION FORM
Thank you so much for applying for NEVER TOO LATE 2020!
We hope you are ready to have an amazing weekend making music, meeting new people and performing at your very own live gig! Please read the important information below before continuing onto our application.
ABOUT NEVER TOO LATE
Never Too Late (NTL) is an intensive three and a half day camp running from Friday 22nd - Monday 25th May at Berger Primary School in Hackney. It provides you with the opportunity to learn the basics of an instrument (or some new skills on one you already play), play in a band and write and perform a song. No musical experience is needed AT ALL - but you must be over 18 to attend.
The camp exists to provide opportunities for women, trans and non-binary people to overcome barriers to music-making and performance, and to give participants' confidence and self-esteem a boost. The majority of tutors, band coaches and other people working at the camp are volunteers who are passionate about supporting women, trans and non-binary people to get involved with music-creation.
WHAT HAPPENS AT CAMP
Over the course of the weekend you will:
- form a band with other participants (with our help)
- learn and practice an instrument (you will be allocated an instrument based on your preferences)
- take part in workshops that will help you develop your skills, work on your song-writing and fine-tune your performance
- watch live bands at our lunchtime 'mini gigs'
- perform the song you have written with your band on stage at a live gig venue.
INSTRUMENT TUITION
EVERYONE at the camp will learn the basics of an instrument - or new skills on one they already play - in group instrument tuition with two tutors. The instruments available to choose from are: electric guitar, electric bass, synth, drumpad and acoustic drums. Everyone will have the opportunity to work on and perform vocals if they want.
LIVE GIG
The final gig will take place at The Victoria in Dalston on the 25th May at 6pm. This is where all the bands will perform their newly-written songs. This is a public gig and you can invite your friends and family to come along to this awesome celebration of what the bands have achieved over the weekend.
CAMP FEE
Participants at the camp are encouraged to pay what they can afford on a sliding scale.
A sliding scale is a tool to ensure everyone has equal access to experiences like Never Too Late, regardless of financial resources. We ask for your active participation in deciding your contribution. If a sliding scale is implemented effectively, everyone pays a similar percentage of their income for tuition. This way, the cost is not pocket change for some and a big commitment for others. While Girls Rock London is a small organisation, we make sliding scale a priority because we acknowledge that we live in a world of differing privileges and income disparities.
The total cost of camp to Girls Rock London is £800 per person, but our funding from the Arts Council means that ALL places are subsidised. This means that we can provide high-quality, affordable experiences for people who would otherwise not be able to afford to take part.
Our suggested contribution for various income bands is listed below. Please note our suggestions are simply that; you can decide what you would like to pay based on the income available to you. You can also pay an amount not listed below (although it must be over £150).
Please consider your own income, or that of your household, and contribute what you can afford as an individual:
• Under £20,000 - £150 (sold out, waiting list only)
• £20,001 - £27,000 - £210 (sold out, waiting list only)
• £27,001 - £35,000 - £280 (sold out, waiting list only)
• £35,001 - £42,000 - £345
• £42,001 - £50,000 - £400
• £50,001 + - £510 (you will be able to enable someone else to come if you pay more)
Please do feel free to ask us any questions if you are unsure about how much to pay.
- Camp fees can be paid in instalments, although 100% of the fee must be paid before the camp start date.
- We need a *non-refundable* deposit of £100 to secure your place on the camp. You will receive an email with details about how to pay this after your place has been confirmed.
- All equipment, tuition, refreshments and meals are included in this price - there are no hidden costs.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Do you want to make music? Are you over 18?
We are looking for women, trans and non-binary folk aged 18 or over who want to make music and be part of a band in a supportive and like-minded community. You don’t need ANY musical experience at all - you may have never touched an instrument before. You don't need to like rock music - 'Girls Rock' is about an attitude rather than a specific genre. None of this matters. If you want to get involved we want to hear from you!
There is also no age limit, please feel free to sign up whatever your age - is never too late to start!
We also want to make sure that our camps reflect the communities we live and work in, and that women from all backgrounds who want to come to our camps feel welcome. To help us do this - among other things - we are reserving a quarter of our places for women of colour, disabled women and trans and non-binary people. We welcome applications from any individuals over the age of 18, especially if you identify with any of the groups we have mentioned above.
HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL THERE BE AT CAMP?
There will be 25 participants at our camp, from which five bands will be formed. We think the camp will fill up quickly so please make sure to get your application in early so as not to be disappointed. Those who are not accepted this time round will be placed on a waiting list.
CAMP LOCATION
Never Too Late will take place at Berger Primary School, London, E9 6HB.
