Global Well-being Among Artists in 2021
While the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and Census Bureau collects information about the arts, the information is highly aggregated – there is not enough detail to distinguish across the different specialties within the fine arts, especially opera and the performing arts. The absence of data and measurable outcomes makes it difficult to tell the artist’s story to policymakers, meaning that artists often do not even have a seat at the table.
Living Opera wants to change that by creating an annual survey where we measure the state of the performing arts where the bulk of artists are freelancers by the very nature of the job. We will produce an annual report and research that gets used to influence not only the sector but also public policy and conversations about the role of the arts in society.
