Chinese American Women in History Conference 2019 Submission
The 1882 Foundation is organizing a Chinese American Women in History Conference during Women's History Month in March 2019 in Washington, DC (exact date and location TBD). We aim to highlight the under-represented stories of Chinese American women who fought for equal rights and opportunity. We are launching a CALL FOR PAPERS for scholars, media creatives, community activists, and interested individuals to participate in this first conference of its kind to raise awareness of the contributions and labor of Chinese American women in the creation and cultural sustainability and diversity of America.

Think of the mother of the Lum family, a Chinese American family living in the Jim Crow South who fought for her daughter's right to access education in segregated schools, all the way to the Supreme Court. The families affected by family reunification after the War Brides Act. Chinese American Women in the Military and defense industry. And countless other experiences and perspectives that have not yet received the recognition they deserve in the American story.

Preference will be given to papers that focus on the significance of the War Brides Act, its impact on the experience of the Chinese American working class communities, and Chinese American women as cultural carriers.

We encourage the following types of submissions to contribute to sessions in the conference (though not limited to the following):

— A scholarly article based on original research, including footnotes and bibliography (no more than 10,000 words)

— An opinion-editorial exploring an issue specific to the experience of Chinese American women in history, organizational history, contemporary policy, and/or activism drawing from personal experience

— A film or multi-media project focused on oral histories or the stories of Chinese American women

— A proposal for a panel discussion on a particular topic connected to Chinese American women.

Please submit an abstract for the submission of no more than 500 words by September 30, 2018 for consideration and selection.
