Recent events have highlighted the pervasive nature of one of our country's greatest evils: racism. Whether systemic or interpersonal, racism’s stubborn roots find their origins in all corners of our society—that includes the very halls, hospitals, and classrooms we walk as medical students. There is an inextricable connection between the murders of—Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and the countless other Black lives unjustly lost to racism—and the lack of representation of Black people in academia including Harvard Medical School and School of Dental Medicine. Both of these ills are rooted in the historical erasure of Black people and the deafening silence that has allowed this erasure to flourish under the influence of systemic racism. One looming example of this is the namesake of the Holmes academic society and the reason HMS has consecutively received lower scores on the White Coats for Black Lives report card (1).

Holmes society is named after Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., lauded on the HMS website for, “his knowledge of science, his gifts as a teacher...his enthusiasm for people, his brilliance as a literary figure and social commentator" (2,3).  However, there is a lack of mention that his social commentary often centered on the promotion of eugenics and his violence toward Black and Indigenous peoples (Figure 1), (4). In fact, he was one of the first American proponents of eugenics and espoused such theories throughout his time at HMS and after. It is also clear Holmes did not acknowledge the basic rights and humanity of Black medical students. As Dean of HMS in 1850, Holmes was challenged by students and faculty to revoke the acceptances of three Black students that had gained admission into HMS. Holmes responded by expelling the Black students and wrote, “This experiment that the intermixing of the white and black races in their lecture rooms is distasteful to a large portion of the class and injurious to the interests of the school” (Figure 2). HMS would not have substantial admission of Black students until the year after Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in 1968.  

Holmes’ actions are not emblematic of the HMS/HSDM community we strive to be in 2020. In response the atrocious acts of injustice and bigotry witnessed over the past month, Dean Daley penned in his letter, “In Solidarity” that:

“Among these core principles is that we acknowledge the strengths and weaknesses of our history and actively promote social justice, challenge discrimination, and address disparities and inequities. Each of us must stand as a defender of higher ideals and an advocate for a more just and inclusive society. I ask each of you to take a few moments today to reflect on our individual roles and responsibilities.”

It is our responsibility to uphold these ideals and that begins by translating well-crafted statements into action by looking internally at how our community might be perpetuating the status quo of white supremacy and systemic racism. It is simply unjust we ask our Black and Indigenous students to sit in a classroom and learn in a society named after an individual who was an avid proponent of their oppression and denier of their humanity. The Holmes name has far too long been accepted as a toxic fixture in our academic environment, and it is time for our HMS/HSDM community to demonstrate that the lives of Black students truly do matter.

We propose that we change the name of the Holmes society as soon as possible to that of a luminary that more appropriately represents our mission of fostering a “diverse, inclusive community” (5). This person should not be yet another one of the typical cis-gendered white males that have been traditionally lauded as the sole contributors to medicine and hold pseudo monology on the halls of our institution. Instead, they should be an individual from an underrepresented group in medicine that has achieved excellence, inspired hope, and uplifted their community.

The University of Michigan Medical School has already set a powerful example of what this could look like (6). Three of their four “M-home” societies, created in 2015, were named after two women and a Black man. Though societies at HMS have been around much longer, this is our opportunity to send a message and set the precedent that it is never too late to do the right thing.

As Dean Daley stated in his letter, “Through both individual and collective action, HMS can be a force for good and an agent of change during these challenging times.” Our community has great potential to become a force for good, but the work must first start from within.
