The Student/Farmworker Alliance Steering Committee (SC) is the main leadership body of one of the most dynamic, creative student/worker movements in the country! Each SC member forms part of a supportive team of highly committed SFA members working closely with one another, SFA coordinators, CIW staff, and other allies to carry forward the work of the farmworker-led Campaign for Fair Food and Fair Food University and help build a thriving national network of allies.

Steering Committee (SC) Overview

SC members serve as regional organizers for the Campaign for Fair Food and Fair Food University for one calendar year. Through their membership, SC members receive trainings on how to become effective organizers, in both the local and national contexts. The SC's overarching purpose is to advance the goals and current work of CIW. It is rooted in CIW’s particular farmworker organizing context, but continues networking, acting in solidarity, and representing SFA in its regions. 


The Basics

  • The SC takes its lead from farmworker leaders of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) and the needs of the farmworker community in Immokalee;
  • SC terms begin on January 1, 2026 and last one year. Members may reapply to maintain their positions.
  • A goal of the SC is to build a leadership body representative of the great diversity of the SFA network, with emphasis on race, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, geography, campaign experience, and student/non-student status.
  • The SC aims to create an intergenerational space for discussion that bridges the experiences of CIW staff, SFA alumni, and current SFA students. 
  • All SC members are expected to participate actively throughout their term, as outlined in the commitments below.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Educate, organize and mobilize support around the Campaign for Fair Food in your respective communities, regions, and networks;
  • Facilitate communication and connection within the network (particularly by holding all-calls) and between SFA and other networks, movements, and allies;
  • Actively fundraise to support local organizing;
  • Together with SFA and CIW leadership, help to make decisions around SFA structure, campaigns and programs;
  • Maintain SFA identity online through the SFA website and social media, in collaboration with established organizational communication processes.
Time Commitment
At minimum, SCers are expected to participate on 1-hour weekly conference calls, and outside of these calls, SCers should expect to do 1-3 hours of SFA responsibilities each week. During high activity moments within the year, responsibilities on the SC may increase.
