Thomas Paine Symposium and Transcribe-a-thon Registration
Harding University, in partnership with Arkansas TV and the Arkansas Center for the
Book at the Arkansas State Library, invites the public to a two-day humanities program in
Searcy, featuring two stand-alone events that can be attended together or
individually. Both events are FREE and open to the public.

Friday, March 13 - Thomas Paine Symposium 
Harding University will host an engaging Thomas Paine Symposium exploring “Common
Sense”, its revolutionary impact and enduring legacy, as well as other key writings by
Paine. In conjunction with the symposium, The Remnant Trust will feature a display of
approximately 20 rare early American first printings, with the goal of including works by
Paine as well as first editions of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. 

Saturday, March 14 - Transcribe-a-Thon 
The community is invited to a free, interactive Transcribe-a-Thon that brings history to life.
The program will begin with a preview segment from “The American Revolution,” by Ken
Burns, Sarah Botstein, and David Schmidt, followed by guided instruction and live
transcription of 18th-century documents using the Library of Congress By the
People platform. Participants will work with three featured collections: North American 
Print Culture in a Revolutionary Age, Women of the Early Republic, and Early Copyright
Ledgers. 
No experience is required, and lunch will be provided. 

Transcription work will take place on computers. Participants are welcome to bring their
own laptop or tablet if they prefer, and computers will also be available for those who are
unable or prefer not to bring a device. 

While each event stands on its own, attending both offers a deeper look at the era—from
learning about its most important documents to working directly with them.
