Atonement Lutheran Church offers two awards to high school seniors who will be attending college/university as freshmen in the fall.
The Jeanne M. Chaney Memorial Book Award and the Martin Lutheran Service Award are no longer available and replacing them will be a new award, The Gail I. Hoch Memorial
Book Award.
The Awards. The recipient will receive $1,000 for the first year of higher education. This will support the cost of books (paper/electronic) or computers and software, for course requirements.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
Hold US citizenship or be a permanent resident of the US.
Be a member of Atonement Lutheran Church for one year or more.
Have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
Be a graduating high school senior.
Plan to enroll in a 4-year degree program following graduation from high school.
Applying, Selection Committee, Notification
Eligible applicants will submit the application, including all required information, essay, transcripts, and recommendations, as specified, by May1. At the bottom of this page, click NEXT for the google doc application.
A selection committee of three to five members from Atonement Church will review the applications, interview each applicant and select the award recipient. The Chair will contact applicants via email or telephone as each step proceeds. Questions may be directed to the Chair. Relatives of the applicants may not serve on the committee.
The Committee will notify all applicants, including the award recipient, by mail, a week after interviews are completed. The award recipient will receive a telephone call from a pastor of Atonement Lutheran Church prior to the mailing.
2 Attachments to the Application
1. Two Letters of Recommendation
Writers of these may be members of the community, church, or school staff. Letters should include length of time and circumstances regarding the writer’s acquaintance with the applicant and his/her achievements.
If the application is delivered, recommendations may be sealed in an envelope with the completed application packet and the writer’s signature written over the seal.
If the applicant sends the application by email to the church office, the writer should mail or email his/her recommendation directly to Atonement Lutheran Church.
Relatives of applicants may not be used for recommendations.
2. Transcripts
Transcripts should include your most recent grades and GPA. Official transcripts are preferred. We acknowledge final spring transcripts may not yet be processed. Unofficial transcripts of the final Spring term are accepted. Transcripts are to be mailed or emailed from your high school unless delivered with the completed application packet, as previously noted.
