Who are we?
The Adelante Initiative is a forward-thinking Humanities Amped program recruiting dedicated individuals to tutor recently-immigrated English Language Learning Students in Tara High School.
What will you gain?
By volunteering with Adelante in Spring 2026, you will gain valuable hands-on experience navigating these diverse classrooms, and fostering your ability to use trauma-informed, healing centered approaches to mentoring. This opportunity will allow you to begin shaping the future of education one student at a time.
Professional skills you will gain: equity/inclusion training, communication across languages, critical thinking skills, leadership skills, efficient technology use, and accompaniment in a complex environment.

What is the time commitment?
Volunteers will work with students for a minimum of two class periods per week (3 hrs of classroom time).
In order to meet school requirements and facilitate on-going education, all volunteers undergo a background check, attend a one-hour virtual safety training, one on-site training, and two reflection sessions throughout the semester.
Who are we looking for?
Individuals who are compassionate, dedicated, and willing to make a consistent commitment to the students they serve.
Proficiency or fluency in Spanish is not required, but will give volunteers a substantial advantage in the classroom.
