Some
300 facilities workers at St Helier and Epsom hospitals in Surrey
- including cleaners, porters, caterers, ward hosts, and housekeepers - are voting to strike.The overwhelming majority of these workers are from migrant and minority ethnic backgrounds and despite being NHS employees, having been brought in-house 4 years ago in June 2021, they are still denied full NHS Agenda for Change pay and conditions.
This means:
they do not get sick pay from day;
their hourly wage is lower;
they get up to 2 weeks’ less annual leave;
They get no night-time and weekend enhancements;
The employer pension contribution is 3% instead of 23%
They’re only demand is Equality. They’ve spent four years asking for it and for four years they’ve been told to “just wait a little longer” with no indication of how long a little longer is.
That’s why they have said enough is enough.
This will be one of the most significant strikes amongst facilities workers in the NHS and they will need your support to win.
