New York is one of only 3 states in the ENTIRE United States that has a Green Amendment. Meaning, New York has given the people of its state a constitutional right to clean air, clean water, and a healthful environment for current and  future generations. By a vote of over 70% of New Yorkers in 2021, this powerful right was added to the New York Declaration of Rights, giving the power to the people to defend their environmental rights.

Our goal is to lift up the power and values of having this constitutional right, to challenge New York's government leaders (Gov Hochul, AG L. James, the new NY DEC Commissioner) to embrace the opportunity and obligation for greater environmental protection and environmental justice the NY Green Amendment provides.

The more that gather, the stronger our message to government that we demand they respect and protect our environmental rights.

Art. I Section 19 of the New York Constitution reads:
  1. Each person shall have a right to clean air and water, and a healthful environment.
Here is the text of the letter we will be delivering to Governor Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Letitia James, and Acting DEC Commissioner Sean Mahar:

I would like to sign on/I would like to sign my organization on, to a letter that will be delivered to the NY Governor, NY AG, and NYDEC Commissioner that will read:

Dear Governor Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Letitia James, and Acting DEC Commissioner Sean Mahar,

We the undersigned organizations and individuals, living and working in the state of New York, send you this letter urging you to embrace the rights, duties and obligations created by Article 1, Section 19 of the New York State Constitution, aka the New York Green Amendment. Passed in 2021 with the support of over 70% of New York voters, this groundbreaking amendment both recognizes and protects our fundamental right to clean water and air, and a healthful environment.

The state must take affirmative steps to ensure the right of our people to a clean and healthful environment, enforced by the passage of the New York Green Amendment, is protected. It has been disappointing to see the state not enforce Article 1, Section 19 to its full potential. We are gravely concerned that, nearly three years after its enactment, agencies are not taking protected environment rights into consideration when making decisions that could impact our air, water, and the environment.

Now is the time for you to embrace New York's role as a leader in the national Green Amendment movement, and to embrace the opportunity and obligation for greater environmental protection that Article 1 Section 19 of the New York Bill of Rights provides.
