Introduction to Scrambling - June 22 - 23, 2019
THIS IS AN APPLICATION FORM ONLY; SPACES ON THE TRIP ARE LIMITED.

Are you a competent hiker looking to expand your possibilities? Or a sport climber looking to gain confidence moving in un-roped terrain? Under the direction of the Alpine Club of Canada Edmonton Section, this combined lecture-field trip aims to introduce participants to scrambling, a poorly-defined sport which involves aspects of hiking, mountaineering, and climbing in the pursuit of summiting peaks without the use of ropes and other technical gear.

The volunteer-led weekend will focus on getting participants comfortable moving safely and efficiently in mountain terrain, while taking opportunities to provide tips in route finding, hazard management, and scrambling technique. We will camp at Grey Jay Group Camping near Canmore, splitting off into smaller groups during the day to ascend peaks of easy to moderate difficulty. Upon completion, participants should achieve the necessary skills and confidence to participate in easy to moderate scrambling trips lead by the Alpine Club of Canada or University of Alberta Outdoors Club.

Enjoyable participation requires good to excellent hiking fitness.

All participants must provide their own camping gear, supportive footwear, a helmet, and a day pack to carry lunch and water. Car pools will be arranged for all participants and will require several volunteer drivers.

A mandatory pre-trip evening lecture will address aspects including trip planning, route selection, and gear.

Tentative Trip Costs: ~$30-40 for camping and leader expenses (cost may vary depending on number of participants and excludes participant's food and carpool gas)
