Want to know how your students are experiencing your course before final evaluations? Mid-Semester Inquiry Surveys (MSIs) give instructors a powerful opportunity to gather formative, anonymous feedback from students midway through the semester. By using MSIs, you can gain real-time insights into student learning, engagement, and classroom dynamics—allowing you to make meaningful adjustments that improve the student experience and your teaching effectiveness.
Please complete one separate form for a CFDE mid-semester inquiry survey (MSI) for each class or section that you'd like to assign this survey to during Spring 2026. For summer 2026 or Fall 2026, we'll circulate a new form before those terms.
Once we receive your MSI survey request, we'll create a Google form with 4 questions for your students to give feedback on:
1. What is helping you learn in this class?
2. What is limiting your learning in this class?
3. What suggestions do you have for the instructor?
4. What could you, as a student, do to improve your learning and engagement in this class?
The survey should take about 8–10 minutes for students to complete. Both the CFDE and you will see student responses exactly as students wrote them. Please note that we cannot customize the survey questions.
The survey is managed by the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence (CFDE), which will compile a summary of all responses and share it with you as a digital report. After you have received the digital report, we recommend that you schedule a teaching consultation with us to discuss the trends that you saw in the data.
CFDE's MSIs are only for faculty and instructors of record at this time.
The anonymous MSI data will help the CFDE design future programing (e.g., if we learn that students have similar feedback across courses or a subset of courses, then we could design a workshop to help meet those needs.)
