This 2 day workshop is designed to help play therapists understand aggressive play from a neuro-biological perspective. With the help of neuroscience, interpersonal neurobiology, and a Synergetic Play Therapy framework therapists will learn how to effectively work with this type of play in a way that supports nervous system regulation, reorganization of the child’s lower centers of the brain and decreases compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. This 2 day workshop will take participants to new possibilities as they explore a science based process for working with children at the deepest, most profound levels while staying safe and sane. They will learn the art of sword fighting, gun play, bop bag play, and more while understanding what it takes to maximize growth and integration for their clients and for themselves.

Learning Objectives:
1.Therapists will begin to be able to describe how play therapy works from a neurobiological perspective.
2. Therapists will be able to describe the importance of authenticity and emotional congruence in a play therapy process.
3. Therapists will be able to describe how to work with aggression and trauma in the play room without having their own nervous system shut down leading to vicarious trauma.
4. Therapists will be able to understand how their own “window of tolerance” can impact the healing process.
5. Understand the link between a child’s dys-regulated states of their nervous system and their aggressive and traumatic play.
6. Understand how to facilitate aggressive play in the play therapy process without increasing or promoting aggression.
7. Learn how to keep yourself regulated in the midst of intense play/trauma play and death in the play room.
8. Learn how to set boundaries without shaming or shutting down a child's play.
9. Understand what it takes to become the "external regulator" in the playroom to support nervous system integration.
10. Understand what to do when "emotional flooding" happens in a play therapy session.
11. Understand the Synergetic Play Therapy concept of "The Set Up" in the play room.
12. Understand what to do when aggressive play begins and a parent is in the playroom.
