HCA, that owns Regional Medical Center announced closure of Trauma, STEMI, and Stroke programs in August of 2024. These are essential services that the hospital provides for trauma patients as well as patients who have had a heart attack or a stroke.
By signing this petition, I demand that HCA keep these programs open!
Regional is located where freeways 101, 680 and 280 converge so it's easily accessible for any car accidents that happen in that area. If trauma patients can't go to Regional, they will need to go miles away to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center or further, which could take a long time when seconds count to save a life.
Regional accounts for about 26% of all trauma cases according to the latest data available. If all of Regional's trauma patients ended up at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, it would push its volume up by 65%! This is especially problematic since Valley already has a high ambulance diversion rate of 5.1% (more than double Regional's).
Additionally, Regional's Emergency Department admitted 21% more patients with acuity levels of "severe w/threat" than Valley in 2022, illustrating that closing Trauma Services at Regional will be devastating for the community.
Finally, Regional's ED patients are disproportionately Hispanic and Latino, compared to the rest of the County (61.3% compared to 24.7%) and are disproportionately Spanish speakers, compared to the rest of the County (24.6% compared to 17.1%). By closing its trauma center, Regional will be especially impacting this community.
Registered Nurses at Regional Medical Center, members of California Nurses Association care for patients not only in Santa Clara County, but also San Benito, Monterey, and Santa Cruz. Where will these patients go if they cannot come to Regional?
HCA is putting profits over patients! HCA cares more about their bottom line than our community!
We demand that HCA keep these programs open! It's a matter of life or death!
HCA can surely afford it! HCA Healthcare just revealed its plans for the 2024 Executive Officer Performance Excellence Program. Top executives for the 182-hospital health system will be eligible to earn performance awards based on achieving specific targets.
If targets are met, CEO Samuel Hazen will receive 170% of base salary while Jon Foster, executive vice president and COO, will receive 125% of base salary and Michael McAlevey, senior vice president and chief legal officer, will receive 85% of base salary, which will be increased to 100% on April 1.
