Students will be removed from a route if they do not ride for (10) consecutive days. This excludes students participating in extracurricular activities.
Lexington City Schools requires that Pre-K-3rd grade students be supervised
at their designated afternoon bus stop location by a parent or legal guardian. Parents or legal guardians must be at the designated bus stop location in the
afternoon to receive their Pre-K-3rd grade student(s) from the school bus. If there is not a parent or legal guardian at the designated afternoon bus stop
to receive their Pre-K-3rd grade student(s), the student(s) will be transported back to
their assigned school at the end of the assigned route, if feasible. If services to additional routes that follow directly after will be disrupted greatly, then students may be transported back to their assigned school at the end of the last scheduled route before the bus returns back to it's assigned parking location.
Students will only be assigned to (1) morning bus stop location and (1) afternoon stop location. The only exception made to this rule will be granted to students who have TRUE shared custody arrangements. Students who are granted multiple assignments are required to have a consistent transportation schedule in order to ensure schools and drivers can be accountable at all times. It is the responsibility of the school to keep students shared custody transportation plans on file and provide those schedule details to drivers. Parents who fail to follow a consistent transportation schedule may result in the suspension of multiple assignments. Requested bus stop addresses must be within the zone eligible for transportation service.
Temporary transportation requests. Schools may work with families who have TRUE emergency situations or legitimate transportation needs that may require a temporary transportation arrangement to be put into place. Requests made simply out of convenience or due to in-consistent, alternating work schedules do not justify emergency situations or legitimate transportation needs that would warrant temporary transportation arrangements.
If it is determined that there are legitimate transportation needs that may require a temporary transportation arrangement to be put into place, schools must then ensure that the following criteria listed below are met prior to issuing temporary transportation arrangements.
Upon request, the superintendent or designee may, but is not required to, assign a student to a bus to transport the student to and/or from a location other than home if the following conditions are met:
1. The student’s parent or guardian submits a written, signed request that states the specific location other than home to which the student is to be transported and acknowledges that the parent or guardian and not the school system is responsible for the student’s safety once the child has departed from the bus.
2. The request for such transportation does not require a bus to deviate in any significant way from an established route.
3. There is capacity on the bus if the request would necessitate the student’s riding a different bus from the regularly assigned bus.
4. The student’s residence and requested bus stop are within the zone eligible for transportation service.
5. The request for such transportation does not cause the school system to incur any additional cost.
6. The proposed bus stop meets safety standards established by law, the board, the superintendent, or the principal.
Any changes in bus stops must be approved by the Transportation Department.
