Summer Classes for Kids and Adults
The Holland Patent Central School District is collaborating with the Mohawk Valley Community College Workforce Development and the Greater YMCA of Rome to offer a variety workshops, classes and mini-camps for the Holland Patent Central School District community youth and adults. All summer classes, workshops and mini-camps will be held on the campuses of the Holland Patent Central School District.

We would like to know if the Holland Patent School District community is interested in the classes, workshops and mini-camps listed below. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey below. Week of Code - Beginners In this camp you will learn about algorithms and conditional statements, and use these new skills to create games and stories in the MIT web portal of Scratch. You will leave with a good foundation of the visual block code languages in CODE.org and in Scratch. Ages 8-10.

Be A Star Theater Camp - Explore different styles of acting techniques through a variety of activities and games, and learn how to “get into character” as you prepare various scenes and monologues and then perform them in class. Genres include dramatic, comedic, improvisation, and musical theater. Ages 9 and up.

SAT Review Class - Develop the skills you need to do your best on the SAT, in this in depth four session course. Learn how to approach each section of the test; how to understand what is being asked; and how to answer correctly with confidence. This course addresses all sections of the test. Bring pens and a scientific or graphing calculator. 10 hours.

Tech Savvy Seniors - Technology changes every day, and it can feel impossible to keep up with it. Luckily, there are easy ways to understand seemingly complex technology. By looking at emails, operating systems, social media, cell phones and apps, together we can enter the 21st century! This course is the perfect opportunity to brush up on computer and smart phone basics, with extra time built in towards the end of class to just ASK! Ask the instructor any questions you have about your technology problems. 6 hours.

Defensive Driving - This program offers the benefits of a 10% insurance discount and up to four points off your driving record, and emphasizes safe and defensive driving techniques for drivers of all ages and skill levels, including those with a learner’s permit. Bring a license or permit to class, as well as lunch. Students are required to be on time and stay until the completion of class. This course is offered in partnership with the Oneida County Traffic Safety Department.

Mommy and Me Swim – A water adjustment class for children accompanied by a parent or guardian. Through the aid of the instructor, parents guide their children through basic water orientation skills and songs. Emphasis is placed on getting acclimated to the water, fun and games. Ages 6mo-3yrs old.

Beginner Swim – Will learn basic stroke. Designed for a new swimmer and getting face fully in water. Swimmers will work on kicking skills with and without flotation devices. Ages 3-5 yrs old.

Intermediate Swim – For children who don’t need flotation devices and are very comfortable in the water. Participants learn paddle stroke, front and back floats, build endurance and start treading water. Ages 5 and up based on skillset.

African Drum Class – Learn the basics of African drumming. The lessons will be played on the Djembe drum which originated in West Africa from the Mali Empire. It was played for the king of Mali. Ages 7-and up.

Tumbling Classes – Children will participate in basic tumbling, which includes learning basic tumbling, balance, stretching and social interaction. Ages 3-6 years old.

Yoga – Yoga is a gift for the body and mind. It is designed to improve the health, performance, and mental acuity of individuals. Yoga blends balance, strength, flexibility, and power. Ages 16 and up. 6 weeks one day a week.

Splash Fit – This class incorporates gentle aerobics using water weights and noodles. The music can change our perceptions, sharpen our attention, and even enhance our intelligence for the day. It will also increase flexibility and endurance. Ages 16 and up.

Aqua Motion – This class is suitable for all fitness levels. It is a Therapeutic form of exercise for those recovering from stroke, injuries, arthritis pain, fibromyalgia, knee or hip issues. It’s great for increasing range of motion. These classes will be offered combined. Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs for four weeks. Ages 21 and up.

Family Boot Camp - Workout together and challenge yourself with a high energy class you can do with your child. The workout will be appropriate for adults and their children. You will start at a station and rotate together while motivating each other. Ages 8 and up for kids and 18 and up for adults.
