I'm a 17-year old South Asian female and a senior at Bard High School Early College Queens. Art has always been a passion of mine, which I have developing since I was very young. Drawing helped me escape from difficult situations and relax. However, I've always wanted my art to be useful for something. At Bard I got the opportunity to express political and societal issues through my art and I couldn't have felt better. My school was doing BLM day of action and was having this T-shirt design contest and I decided to join. I was sitting on my bed thinking about what I could do for and thought of just making it simple and add symbolism. I tried to represent the true beauty Black people with a women with an afro. I drew her building as her nails to represent NYC. The broken handcuffs we're drawn to show the strength if Black people during this adversity. To show that they know how to stand up for themselves.
