Short-Term Independent Study
Short-Term Independent Study is a temporary academic option available to students who must be absent from school due to unavoidable circumstances. This program supports students who will miss a minimum of one (1) and up to fifteen (15) school days. Absences of 1–3 days will be automatically approved. Absences beyond three days require administrative approval. Short Term requests will not be available during the first nine days of school, state testing, and the last ten days of school.
Please note: This program is for short-term absences only and is not intended as a substitute for long-term educational placement.
How It Works
Once approved, students will receive a Short-Term Independent Study Agreement and Assignment Sheet. These must be signed by the student, parent/guardian, and a school representative. The forms can be picked up from the front office, House teacher, or downloaded here.
To receive attendance credit, students must complete all assigned work by the given deadlines and return the completed assignments along with the signed agreement.
If the contract is not signed or the work is not completed within 14 days of initial short term date, the absence will be marked unexcused.
Accessing Assignments
Assignments will be provided through Google Classroom or directly by the teacher. Students are responsible for staying on pace and completing all assigned work to maintain academic progress and meet state attendance requirements.
Responsibilities
Student: Log in daily to Google Classroom (if applicable); follow the assignment schedule provided; submit all assignments within 10 school days of the assigned date; reach out to teachers if clarification or support is needed. Return completed Assignment Sheet to the front office.
Parent/Guardian: Support your child’s daily participation; ensure a quiet and organized space for learning; communicate with teachers or the Independent Study Coordinator as needed; ensure the Independent Study Agreement is signed and returned.
Teacher: Provide assignments in Google Classroom or paper format; ensure assignments match the quality and content of in-class instruction; review and assess completed work; complete the assignment list, record completion and upload digital proof of school work once the student returns.
