FUNERARY STONES OF THE JEWISH CEMETERY IN ALBA IULIA

Project introduction

The proposed project, “Conservation and Restoration of the Monumental Stones of the Jewish Cemetery in Alba Iulia”, has as main objective the protection and conservation of one of the most important landmarks of Jewish presence in Transylvania – the Jewish cemetery in Alba Iulia – through the restoration of several funerary monuments from within the cemetery.

One of the reference cemeteries of Alba Iulia is that of the Jewish community here. Datable by the funerary inscriptions on the tombstones ever since the 18th century, the Jewish cemetery in Alba Iulia appears in the current placement on two of the plans of the Vauban type fortification, located on the field around it, initially outside the town and with urban development becoming part of the urban perimeter.
