Eligibility & Award Information
The nominee must:
• be presently serving as a social studies educator (K-12) with at least a half-time appointment.
• have taught a minimum of three years at the designated grade level.

Anyone may nominate. Self-nominations will be accepted.

Awards will be given at K-6 and 7-12 grade levels.

Each recipient will receive:
• Complimentary registration for state social studies conference
• Recognition at state conference (winner is expected to attend the pre-conference award reception on Sunday night)
• A framed commemorative award certificate
• $100 Cash Award
• Award recipient is eligible for nomination for the NCSS award if an NCSS member

Nominations are due by September 15th, award winners will be notified by October 1st.

Developing or using instructional materials creatively and effectively.• Incorporating innovative and verified effective instructional strategies and techniques.• Utilizing the five standards identified in the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards for History, Government, and Social Studies, the ten interrelated themes identified in the National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies as well as integrating the four dimensions of inquiry concepts from College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework in teaching.• Fostering a spirit of inquiry and development of skills related to acquiring, organizing, processing, and using information and making decisions related to both domestic and international matters.• Fostering the development of democratic beliefs and values, and the skills needed for citizen participation appropriate to students’ grade level in classroom, school and community settings.• Professional involvement in activities such as workshops, curriculum developments, committees, and other association activities, etc.

National Council for the Social Studies Endorsement
Educators chosen to receive the Kansas Council for the Social Studies Judy Cromwell Excellence in Teaching Awards will receive endorsement by KCSS for the NCSS award, if winners are NCSS members. It is important for those completing KCSS award nomination packets to understand that the NCSS award has different criteria for
its award nominees.

KCSS award winners wishing to be nominated for the NCSS award will have from late October to late June the following year to complete their applications for the NCSS award (2019 KCSS award winners will be nominated for the 2020 NCSS award).
