Art Alley Permit Application
The Rapid City Arts Council (RCAC) manages the permitting process for Art Alley in Downtown Rapid City on behalf of the city. As artist, ourselves, we understand that the process of creating is different for everyone. This form helps us to support the public art process.

Please review the FAQs and policies for participating here: ART ALLEY (artalleyrc.com)

A permit and assigned location are provided for all approved murals. Please do your best to describe your proposed mural. Your submission will be reviewed by the Rapid City Arts Council staff to ensure the mural is family friendly.

Once the permit is approved, the process is as follows:
1. Pick up the permit*:
Artists must visit the Dahl Arts Center Education Complex in person to pick up a permit (Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm). The Dahl is located at 713 7th street, but the Education entrance is on Kansas City Street. This is 1 1/2 blocks from Art Alley.
*Identification is required when the permit is issued. Acceptable forms of ID: student ID, driver's license, tribal ID card.

2. Map & Mural Location: RCAC will provide a map of the permitted location.

If you are a professional artist and would like to participate in a mural project with youths as part of our Juvenile Diversion or other youth arts education initiatives, please email us at info@artalleyrc.com

Terms & Conditions
·       Artists are required to have a permit to paint in Art Alley. If more than one artist is working on the same piece, each artist must have a permit. School/group art projects are required to apply for a group permit. Painting without a permit is not allowed.
·       Painting permits are site specific. Artists with permits are authorized to paint only in the area(s) designated on the permit and map. Roof top access, meters and utility boxes are strictly off limits. PLEASE SEE PDF AND MAP BELOW TO SELECT YOUR PERMIT SITE.
·       Respect private/public property. Buildings in Art Alley are privately owned. The alley is part of the City right of way. Clean up after yourself and others. All used cans, caps, gloves, and other painting materials must be taken with you and disposed of off-site. Damage to property could result in fines.
·       Climbing on dumpsters is prohibited. Dumpsters are leased and paid for by property owners. Standing on dumpsters will cause damage which you are responsible for.
·       Profane, obscene or offensive imagery or language is not permitted. Artistic content in the Alley must remain appropriate to all ages. We encourage creative and clever expression and advocacy, but it must be expressed through those parameters.
·       Art Alley is a working alley. Delivery trucks and private vehicles utilize the Alley throughout the day, and building/business owners and renters use the Alley to access their parking areas. Avoid painting near cars. Be CAUTIOUS of overspray, (spray paint particles) from spray paint cans. Wind can carry overspray to nearby vehicles and property from several feet away and cause damage. You are responsible for damage to private and public property.
·       You are an ambassador. When painting in Art Alley, you are a representative of, and an ambassador for, a very unique space. Treat the building/business owners and the public with respect and courtesy.
