2019 Encinitas Environmental Award Program: Nomination Form
Welcome to the nomination form for the 2019 Encinitas Environmental Award Program!
The award was founded in 2014 thanks to the efforts of commissioners Jim Wang, Joy Lyndes, and her company Coastal Sage. Now in its fifth year in partnership with The Surfing Madonna Oceans Project, the EAP seeks to recognize deserving individuals, businesses and non-profit organizations for their commitment to environmental stewardship and outstanding environmental achievements in the city.
In addition to the two Excellence in Environmental Stewardship awards that have been historically granted to a for-profit business and a non-profit business each year, the Commission is now adding a new Environmental Hero category to recognize both an adult and a youth that are not necessarily affiliated with a business.
The deadline to submit nominations is Sunday, September 15th by 11:59pm.
Nominations may be in one of four categories: a) Non-profit organization, b) A for-profit business c) Environmental Hero Youth (under 18*), d) Environmental Hero Adult.
The purpose of this award program is to highlight, recognize, and congratulate Encinitas residents, organizations, and businesses that have achieved exceptional environmental goals. By their efforts, these parties promote proper stewardship of the precious environment with which we are blessed.
Each award is an environmentally-themed plaque presented by the Environmental Commission of the City of Encinitas. There will be one award winner in each of the four categories. The award is chosen by an Environmental Commission subcommittee through a competitive selection process.
Nominators may submit multiple nominations, but each nomination must be on a separate form. Self-nominations are also welcome. Nominators do not need to be Encinitas residents, but the nominees must (for individuals) reside in or (for organizations) be based in Encinitas.
Nominations are open until September 15, 2019.
The 2019 Environmental Hero awards will be given by Mayor Catherine Blakespear at the Surfing Madonna Moonlight Beach Run on October 26, 2019, and the 2019 Excellence in Environmental Stewardship awards will be given at The Encinitas Half Marathon, sponsored by Surfing Madonna, on March 29, 2020.

Guidelines for projects worthy of an award include the following:
1. Protects or preserves the environment; examples: conserves energy or water, reduces waste or toxins, reduces air or water pollution, enhances sustainable co-habitation with native plants and animals, or reduces Greenhouse Gases (GHGs).
2. Impacts the community positively: inspires, enlightens, educates, or motivates the community to engage in environmental concerns.
3. Shows innovation and dedication: sustainability requires a determined change from established business-as-usual procedures, so creativity and inspiration are necessary. Patience and persistence are often necessary to see new ideas sprout.
Nominations are evaluated by a jury of five independent environmental leaders in San Diego County. They are not affiliated with the City of Encinitas either as elected officials, as members of any Commission, as staff, or as consultants. The relative weighting of the award criteria is ultimately up to the judges.
